About Wanyin

Hi! I’m Wanyin, a pianist and music educator currently pursuing a Master’s in Piano Performance at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music. I hold a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Eastman School of Music.

I tailor lessons to each student’s goals and learning style, with a focus on healthy technique, efficient practice, and musical expression. Whether you’re a beginner, preparing for an audition, or looking to deepen your musicianship, I’ll help you build confidence and become a more independent musician.

My teaching approach combines solid piano technique, musical understanding, and healthy practicing habits. I believe students learn best when they understand why they are doing something rather than simply being told what to do. I therefore encourage students to listen critically, experiment with different approaches, and develop their own musical ideas.

I also emphasize efficient and sustainable practice. Instead of relying on repetition alone, I help students identify the specific source of a difficulty and choose an appropriate practice strategy. Depending on the student, this may include slow practice, rhythmic variations, mental practice, score analysis, visualization, or isolating specific technical movements.

My goal is ultimately to help students become independent musicians who can make thoughtful decisions about their own playing and practicing.

A typical lesson plan

A typical lesson is adapted to the student's level, goals, and current needs. It may include:

Checking in on practice progress and addressing specific challenges
Technical work such as scales, arpeggios, or exercises when appropriate
Working closely on repertoire, including technique, phrasing, articulation, tone, and musical interpretation
Exploring the score and musical context to help the student develop their own interpretation
Practicing difficult passages together and experimenting with different practice strategies
Setting specific, realistic goals for the student's individual practice between lessons

I also try to leave enough space for questions and exploration, rather than making every lesson follow exactly the same formula.

What sets you apart as a tutor

What sets me apart is my combination of performance experience and formal training in music education. I have experience both as a pianist and as a teacher, so I care not only about what a student plays, but also about how they learn.

I am particularly interested in helping students develop healthy, efficient practice habits and a stronger awareness of their own physical and musical processes. I don't believe there is one correct way for every student to approach a piece. I try to understand how each student learns and adapt my explanations accordingly.

I also value creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their own musical voice.

My lessons are primarily designed for beginner to advanced piano students, including children, teenagers, university students, and adult learners.
