About Hailey J

I’m a professional cellist and cello teacher with over 16 years of teaching experience, working with students from beginner to advanced levels. I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in Cello Performance from Stony Brook University and have performed at renowned venues including Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.

About the lesson

I teach students of a wide range of ages, from young beginners and advanced students preparing for auditions to adults and hobbyists who want to learn the cello for their own enjoyment. Many of my students are highly motivated and consistent in their practice, which allows them to make meaningful progress quickly and experience a strong sense of accomplishment. My students have earned principal and leadership positions in their school orchestra auditions and achieved strong results in auditions and competitions. Most importantly, I’m proud to see them develop confidence and a genuine love and enjoyment for music.
My teaching style is supportive, encouraging, and personalized. I adapt each lesson to the student’s level, learning style, and individual goals. My specialties include cello technique, tone production, bow technique, shifting, intonation, musical interpretation, repertoire preparation, audition preparation, and developing effective practice habits. In a first lesson, I like to get to know the student and learn about their musical experience and goals. We’ll assess their current playing level, work through some exercises or repertoire together, and identify areas to focus on. I’ll then provide personalized feedback and practical suggestions for moving forward.
As I am currently based in NYC, I offer Zoom lessons only. I also offer a free 20-minute Zoom trial lesson so students and families can experience a lesson before committing. I look forward to supporting each student’s musical journey and helping them grow into confident, expressive, and passionate cellists!
