About Brendan

Reading tabs, acoustic technique, and music theory are the foundational building blocks of my eight years of teaching. I hold a Diploma in Guitar from Musicians Institute Hollywood and have spent 13 years gigging professionally across the Bay Area. My experience as both a teacher and performing musician allows me to bring practical, real-world knowledge into every lesson.

My primary focus is helping players move beyond basic pentatonic patterns and develop a deeper understanding of modes, scales, and the fretboard. I tailor lessons to each student's level and goals, building strong fundamentals while making sure the material stays engaging and practical.

The most rewarding part of teaching is watching students grow from simply copying songs and guitar parts to understanding why the music works and eventually creating their own. Seeing a student gain the confidence to write and express their own music is one of the most enjoyable parts of my week.

About the lesson

Guitar is essentially a writing desk rather than a performance prop. I provide custom backing tracks so students can practice soloing at home with full band arrangements.

Learning to navigate the fretboard requires patience, but we will strip away the complexity of technical jargon to focus on your internal voice. I have spent decades in blues and rock bands, so I understand the nuance of gear maintenance and tuning.

Developing your ear remains the quickest way to make progress during our time together. We prioritize original ideas over rigid exam requirements to keep things grounded in your own creativity.
