1. Teaching Method and Techniques:
- Integration of Melodic Dictation and Sight-Singing: Coordinate melodic dictation work with sight-singing. What you sing is what you write. Use the same syllables and patterns in both activities. Sing and practice aurally to enhance written work.
- Start Simple and Progress: Begin with basic patterns and melodies, then gradually introduce complexity (rhythmically, melodically, and harmonically).
2. Typical Lesson Plan:
- Warm-Up: Start with vocal warm-ups and sight-singing exercises in a specific key.
- Key Exploration: Explore pitch relationships within a key.
- Melodic Dictation: Provide short dictations (one to four measures) focusing on specific pitch patterns and rhythms.
- Sight-Singing: Practice sight-singing using solfège syllables and the same patterns from dictation.
- Complexity Gradation: Increase the length and complexity of dictations gradually.
3. What Sets Me Apart:
- Performance Experience: My violin and harpsichord background adds depth to my teaching.
- Composition Experience: I actually use music theory as a composer. To me, theory is practical not theoretical: theory should be immediately useful to the making of music!
- Holistic Approach: Integrating dictation, sight-singing, and ear training ensures a comprehensive learning experience.
- I have extensive teaching experience across multiple subjects and hold a teaching certificate.
4. Target Audience:
Music Theory Classes: Ideal for students studying music theory, AP Music Theory, or related courses, or any musician who wants to increase their musicianship and musical literacy.
