About Thompsn
For the last 9+ years, I’ve dedicated myself to teaching guitar to school and college students, and I’ve learned that the best teaching comes from truly understanding each learner’s motivations and goals. Some students come to me wanting to play their favorite songs; others are driven to write original music or explore advanced theory. No matter the objective, my approach is to create a roadmap that’s both structured and flexible—strong enough to build technical skill, but open enough to nurture creativity. I emphasize fundamentals like finger control, chord clarity, rhythm, and timing early on, then gradually introduce theory and improvisation in ways that are relevant and engaging. My lessons aren’t about memorizing parts; they’re about understanding music deeply so students can confidently play, write, and explore. One of the most rewarding aspects of my teaching journey has been seeing students move from hesitant beginners to confident musicians, especially when they take the stage for the first time. I make a point to celebrate progress and focus on long-term growth rather than quick results. In every session, I aim to create an environment where students feel safe to express themselves, take creative risks, and ask questions. I’ve found that this kind of space fosters both musical and personal development, giving students tools they’ll carry with them beyond the guitar.

I approach teaching guitar as an experience of self-discovery, musical exploration, and consistent growth. At the heart of every lesson is the idea that your journey with music should reflect who you are—not just in the styles you play but in how you learn, how you express yourself, and how you navigate challenges. My role as your teacher is to act as a guide and a partner in that process.
We start by identifying what excites you musically—be it specific artists, genres, techniques, or performance goals—and we build our lessons around that foundation. Rather than rigidly following a method book, we create a living curriculum tailored to your progress, interests, and pace. Technique is important, but it becomes truly meaningful when it helps you say something with the guitar. That’s why from the first few lessons, you’re already playing real music—not just drills or exercises in isolation.
We might use a riff from a favorite song to explore finger strength or a chord change to study voice leading and rhythm. I teach in a way that connects the technical with the expressive. You’ll learn not just how to play something, but how it works, why it sounds the way it does, and how you can make it your own. I adapt tools and language to your learning style. Some students need visual structure—chord grids, fretboard maps, flowcharts. Others thrive on audio—jam tracks, call-and-response, live looping. Still others learn best with physical repetition and intuitive feel. I observe, listen, and adjust the lesson materials accordingly.
When challenges appear—and they always do in any creative pursuit—I don’t offer quick fixes. Instead, I slow things down, show you how to dissect the issue, and provide exercises that build confidence over time. This not only helps solve the immediate problem but builds your self-trust and musical resilience. My feedback is always constructive, respectful, and aimed at making you stronger. We celebrate small wins just as much as big breakthroughs.
Lessons also include broader musical skills like songwriting, understanding chord theory, improvisation strategies, stage preparation, and building a creative practice that fits into your life. Whether you want to play solo, join a band, write songs, or just play for your own joy, I’ll help you develop the tools to do it with clarity and confidence. I teach with the belief that music is for everyone and that the guitar can be a lifelong companion if the learning process feels real, empowering, and connected to who you are.
