About Ben

I am a communication skills trainer with a PhD in Performance Studies, an MFA in Theatre Directing, and a PGCE, with over ten years of experience teaching and coaching learners across secondary, further, and higher education. My background spans performance, behavioural communication, and professional training, which allows me to support students and adults with confidence, clarity, and purpose in how they communicate. I specialise in helping learners develop a strong, authentic voice.

My approach combines evidence-based communication techniques, including Motivational Interviewing, with narrative-based methods drawn from performance and storytelling. This creates sessions that are both structured and creative, giving students practical tools they can use immediately. I have trained medical, veterinary, and allied health students in roleplay-based communication work, including consultation skills, OSCE preparation, and handling challenging conversations.

I also coach professionals preparing for presentations, interviews, and workplace communication, as well as adults seeking greater ease and confidence in everyday interactions. Students describe my lessons as calm, supportive, and motivating. I aim to create a space where learners feel safe to experiment, practise, and grow. My goal is for every student to leave a session feeling more confident, more capable, and more aware of their own strengths as a communicator. I work with learners of all ages and levels, and I tailor every lesson to each individual’s goals, pace, and preferred style of learning.

About the lesson

My work brings together performance, education, and behavioural communication approaches, allowing me to support students, professionals, and practitioners with confidence, clarity, and impact.

My lessons take a practical, supportive, and confidence-building approach. I draw on Motivational Interviewing methods to encourage reflective, client-centred communication, helping learners become more grounded, empathetic, and effective in conversations that matter. This approach is especially valuable for healthcare professionals, educators, campaigners, and anyone working in people-facing roles. I place strong emphasis on narrative-based communication.

Whether preparing for a presentation, developing interview answers, or working on day-to-day communication, I help students shape ideas into clear, engaging stories. This strengthens audience connection, enhances clarity, and builds persuasive, memorable delivery. Roleplay features heavily where appropriate, especially for medical, veterinary, and allied health students preparing for OSCEs, client consultations, or difficult conversations. These sessions provide a safe and structured environment to test out strategies, build confidence, and receive targeted, constructive feedback. A typical lesson lasts one hour, with longer sessions available for presentation coaching or more intensive communication practice. Each learner follows a tailored plan with achievable goals, practical exercises, and optional tasks between sessions.

I was worried they wouldnt engage, or one would get bored because of the age gap
He had all 3 engaged in the lesson straight away, my youngest didnt once complain anything was to hard, she enjoys Bens lessons and looms forward to the next ones,
My son, who usually enjoys maths more, was asking, when are we next seeing Ben?
He adapts the lesson to each child and makrs the learning fun for them.
