I have been a tutor from grades 1st grade all the way to 6th grade with an emphasis on reading and phonics along with reading comprehension and sentence structure. For learning to read I would emphasize letters and sounds, sounding out words, and special sounds in words. Regarding reading comprehension, there's reading and a lot of questions you have to ask and good questions to get the gears turning, and thoughts formed. I do well with first graders and kindergarten age children.
