About Beth
I've been teaching for over 27 years, first as a graduate student in a Big Ten university and then, for the last 22 years, as a college professor at an elite liberal arts college. I've worked with thousands of students--in large survey classes and small honors seminars. I love teaching, but most of all, I love when students love what they're learning. In 2011, I founded a nonprofit organization that partners with public schools in our county to create a culture of high-impact, energizing and relevant learning. The fallout of high-stakes testing in public schools is my obsession: I want to help all students connect back to their curiosity and passion for learning

My basic teaching philosophy: none of the material we study means anything unless it means something to each person in the room and we can get it to mean something to others. Learning doesn't mean memorizing or spitting back facts... it means feeling in your bones why a given set of ideas matters. My teaching style has always been highly individualized and emphasizes embodied close reading. I work with every student to dig into the texts we're reading and to craft projects that align with the questions and ideas they want to pursue. This approach works well for any student at any level, because it is always about reading deeply, finding the stakes of the material, and making it come alive for a larger audience.

Professor Benedix was really one of the only teachers that I felt like really cared about her students. She helped us grow our ideas, was never discouraging, and believed in letting us run with our imagination. I mean, how many professors will let you write a paper on famous movie characters and how they fit within certain religious texts? Six years later and I still think about the lessons she taught us!
I graduated DePauw University in 2017, Professor Benedix was a professor and mentor during my four years. She is an elite educator and a better person. She takes pride in her work and cares for her students. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a quality educational experience.
Beth is a phenomenal professor and created one of the best learning spaces I took part in as an undergraduate. Although I majored in STEM, I took two of Beth's classes in literature and they were the highlight of my education at DePauw University. She is kind, intelligent, and passionate about her craft and her students. I can't recommend her enough!
Beth has always been one of my favorite professors. I was always excited to attend her classes and she genuinely cares about students. I learned so much from her and still think about it even so many years later. Top 1% of teachers out there, no doubt about it!
I had a class with Beth that was utterly transformative. In an academic system with rigid structure and formalities, she gave me the space and ability to think creatively about the writing I'm capable of - crossing boundaries and break rules as needed. I'm so grateful I got to learn from her!
As the first college professor of my undergraduate career, Dr. Benedix was everything you could want from an educator. She listens and allows students to learn from each other while guiding discussions and asking difficult questions of the class. Beth created a meaningful, purposeful educational environment, and I am a better person for having been taught by her.
I always loved Beth's passion for teaching! A true educator who cares about her students and their growth!
Beth is an incredibly kind and wise professor. The care she shows for her students and the literature she teaches is unmatched. As a professor, she routinely keeps things interesting by introducing new formats for mastering material. She teaches complex work in a tactful, compelling way. She always pushes her students to think in new ways. I've learned so much from Beth and will be forever grateful for her mentorship.
Beth was my professor at DePauw University - where she was a celebrated English Literature, Religious and World Studies. Beth was always present, thoughtful, and accommodated her students whenever we needed help in and outside of the classroom. I write with the highest recommendation for Beth in that she teaches with a rarity of kindness and knowledge - a combination you don't see often. 10/10 Professor and 10/10 mentor!
