About Yiwen
My name is Yiwen Wang. I am a classically trained singer (Mezzo-soprano). I completed a Bachelor of Music degree at Queen's University. My vocal training focuses on classical singing: I work on art songs, church music, and opera. I also do musical theater. Singing musical theater songs gives me the opportunity to refine my basic vocal technique so I can sing art songs and opera, which are generally harder. I have also had some experience in conducting and music directing. I served as a music and vocal director for Blue Canoe Theatrical Production Inc. and worked on the music for their musical productions of Footloose and Happy Days. I have also taught several students privately. I am now pursuing a Bachelor of Teacher Education at the University of Ottawa. To me, music has the magic and power to heal and spread joy. I am excited to meet you and get to share this power with you as well! I am a teacher who celebrates students' improvements, and breakthroughs are one of the key motivations for me to teach.

Singing lessons with me are one-on-one, and 1 hour each per week unless arrangements are made otherwise. I teach in a vocal-technique-centric way. I start students with a brief physical warm-up, which usually includes massage and stretching. I then go into vocal warm-up exercises that help individual students with the specific techniques they need to work on. The warm-ups take up to 20 minutes in a 1-hour session; I then move on to working on specific repertoire that's either of the individual's interest or of my choice for them, according to their ability. I will also teach any music theory concepts necessary for the song(s) that the student is working on. I will also teach any essential historical background for interpreting the song.
With students' consent, I do like to record a lesson for them and send them notes from the lesson, including key takeaways. Singing is a long-term journey and requires much patience and motivation. Therefore, I do my best to encourage my students when they do well. I honor the fact that each individual is different as a singer and as a person. I am committed to discovering their full potential in singing with them through our time together.
