About Yuran
Hi, I’m Johnny, a pianist, educator, and passionate believer in the emotional power of music. I’m currently pursuing my Master’s in Piano Performance at Mannes School of Music in New York City, after completing my undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics with a minor in Music at Cornell. My teaching is deeply rooted in connection. I care about how my students feel, not just how they play. I don’t teach with a fixed method—I teach with curiosity, empathy, and the belief that each student’s voice matters. I’ve taught everyone from beginners to advanced players preparing for auditions, and I love watching students grow—not just in skill, but in confidence and self-expression. I bring my full self to every lesson: my discipline, my artistry, and my warmth. As a piano tutor, my approach centers on cultivating a deep love for music while developing strong technical and expressive foundations. I believe that every student brings a unique emotional world to the instrument, and my role is to help them unlock that voice—whether they’re just beginning or have years of experience. Passion is at the heart of every lesson. I want students to feel joy, curiosity, and ownership over their musical journey. Teaching Method and Techniques: I emphasize a balance between structured technique (scales, finger independence, posture) and expressive interpretation. I use storytelling, visual metaphors, and historical context to help students connect emotionally with a piece. I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all teaching—some students thrive on method books, others need to explore freely through improvisation or ear training. I tailor my methods to meet their musical instincts and long-term goals. A Typical Lesson Plan: We usually begin with warmups and short technical exercises tailored to the student's current repertoire or challenges. We then work through one or two pieces, focusing on a combination of musicality, phrasing, and expressive depth. I like to leave time at the end for creative exploration—whether it’s improvisation, talking about a new composer, or reflecting on how the student felt while playing. Progress is tracked, but emotional engagement is never sacrificed. What Sets Me Apart: I view teaching not just as instruction but as mentorship. My students know I care about who they are beyond the piano. Many have told me they feel truly seen in our lessons. I draw from my own experience as a performer and lifelong student of music, and I share both my struggles and breakthroughs. I also adapt based on the student’s energy on a given day—some days, we need discipline; other days, we need to just sit and play for the soul. Who the Lessons Are For: My lessons are open to all ages and backgrounds, but I especially enjoy working with young adults and teens who are passionate about music, whether or not they plan to pursue it professionally. I’ve taught conservatory-bound students, hobbyists rediscovering piano later in life, and even tech majors who use music as a creative outlet. Whether you're learning Beethoven or composing your own themes, I want you to walk away feeling more connected to yourself through music.
