About Christina

Hello there! My name is Dr Christina Smith and I hold degrees from Stanford University (BA), the University of Glasgow (MLitt), and Durham University (MA & PhD). At age 8, I took up classical violin lessons, studying under Dr Shira Katsman and later Linda Vogt. At age 9, I began combining my classical studies with tuition in traditional West Highland fiddle music. My main instructor has been master Scottish fiddler Calum MacKinnon, to whom I owe the firm grounding in the history and culture of his Hebridean home. Throughout the years I've also been lucky to call the likes of Jerry Holland, Paul Anderson, Alasdair Fraser, and Natalie MacMaster, among others, teachers, friends, and musical heroes. At age 16, I turned to fully investing my time into specialising in traditional Scottish fiddle music. For the next decade I went onto play for Royal Scottish Dance classes (in Seattle, San Francisco, and Newcastle), gave solo performances in concerts, competed at invitation-only regional and national Scottish fiddling championships, and was a member of numerous smaller musical groups. Yet one of my favourite things to do is to sit in a pub jam session and learn tunes from others. Today, I'm a university lecturer and tutor. My specialism is early medieval British archaeology, and this has of course taken me to many historical sites in the Western Isles. Fiddle usually accompanies me on these journeys and through it I've got access to play in pretty spectacular architectural settings and landscapes. While my academic hat is the one I wear during the workday, traditional Scottish fiddle music remains my longest and truest love.

About the lesson

I am a committed teacher and have taught violin and traditional Scottish music to children and adults for over a decade. I value making learning music fun and accessible to people of all ages and abilities. In our first session, I'll initially get a sense of your needs and wants. If you're unsure, I'm happy to develop a personalised lesson plan with you so that you can track your progress and get out of this experience what you want. We can work on any of the following technical topics critical to traditional fiddle music. There is, of course, overlap with classical violin: - bow hold/grip - intonation - fingering - playing by ear - grace notes - dynamics (or what we might term, 'light and shade') Playing traditional Scottish fiddle music is much more than just the 'dots' on the page. Our sessions together will not only get you thinking about how to make a tune 'sound Scottish' but will instil confidence in playing solo and finding your unique musical voice. I look forward to working with you!
