About Joe
Hello everyone!
I’m Joe. I started playing chess during lockdown in 2020 and quickly became obsessed with the game. Because I began as a complete beginner myself, I understand the challenges that new players face and what actually helps people improve.
Since then, I’ve gone from a 400 rating to over 2000 on Chess.com, and I’ve been coaching for the last 3 years. I reached 1500 within my first year, then spent the next two years pushing past 2000, so I know both how to improve quickly and how to break through plateaus.
Improvement in chess does take work, but with consistent effort and good guidance, results will come. Whether you choose coaching with me or someone else, having structure and accountability makes a huge difference.
I hope my enthusiasm for the game comes across, and I’d love the opportunity to help you improve and enjoy chess more along the way!

Consultation Lesson:
I offer a free 30-minute consultation where we can talk about your current level, your goals, and how I can help you improve. We may also play a game together, and I’ll explain how I structure my coaching and tailor lessons to each student.
A typical lesson includes:
Warm-up puzzles:
Real positions taken from master games, online games, or your own games. These are personalised to target weaknesses, improve pattern recognition, and reinforce ideas in openings you already play.
Main lesson:
The focus varies depending on your needs and goals. Topics can include:
- Opening preparation and understanding
- Middlegame planning and positional ideas
- Endgames
- Calculation and visualisation training
- Game analysis
- Practical decision-making and time management
After the lesson:
I create Lichess studies covering the material from our session, so you can revisit everything in your own time. For in-person lessons, I’ll usually prepare these afterwards from my notes and memory.

Perfect! Very friendly and helpful. Spent lot of time to make sure I understood several different aspects of the game.

Joe has been a hardworking tutor for me and many others over the past half a decade, putting in countless hours of work outside of sessions to ensure a tailor-made lesson to bring me to the next level. I couldn't be happier with what he's done for me and my playing!
Joe is an excellent chess player and an engaging + clear teacher. I would recommend him to anyone looking to increase their ELO as well as their understanding of chess.
I highly recommend Joe as a banjo teacher for anyone looking to learn and immerse themselves in the world of bluegrass and beyond. I had the pleasure of studying music alongside Joe, and it was through him that I discovered the joys of bluegrass music. Joe has a deep knowledge of the genre and a natural talent for making complex musical concepts accessible and enjoyable to learn.
Joe is a skilled banjo player and his teaching style is incredibly encouraging and supportive. I am fortunate to play in his bluegrass band. I find that his leadership and passion for music makes every rehearsal and performance a rewarding experience. You are in excellent hands with Joe as your teacher.
I had a beginner banjo lesson with Joe and by the end of the lesson I could play a whole tune using correct roll patterns. He tailored the lesson to what I wanted to achieve and was clear when explaining and patient. He also ensured that I would be able to practice at home by recording a few 'basics' videos with me during the lesson. Thanks Joe!
