About Reed
Hello! I'm Reed, a chess instructor and USCF Tournament Director. I have over a decade of playing experience and 3 years of teaching experience. I first learned the rules at age 5 and continued playing throughout elementary school and middle school. In college, I competed in the Portland State University Collegiate Chess League, and after graduating, I continued developing as both a player and instructor by teaching with Rose City Chess and now I have also started my own coaching business as well, Pawns to Pieces.
I am currently ranked among Oregon’s top female USCF players, including a top 10 ranking in blitz and top 20 rankings in both regular and quick chess. I also have a chess.com rapid rating of 1700+, placing me above 99% of chess.com players.
As an instructor, I enjoy helping students of all ages discover and improve at chess. I work with beginners as young as 5 years old, as well as adult learners who are just starting their chess journey or looking to strengthen their skills. My goal is to make chess approachable, engaging, and rewarding while helping students build confidence, problem-solving skills, and a deeper understanding of the game.

I teach absolute beginners through 800 USCF rating (or 1000 Rapid on Chess.com). I'm happy to teach you the rules.
My teaching approach is tailored to meet the specific needs of each player. During our first lesson we will discuss your chess goals and begin by either playing a practice game, reviewing your past games or doing a chess exercise that will help me gauge your current level and learn what areas could use improvement.
In future lessons we will do puzzles together, look at your past games and do other exercises based on your blind spots. This includes looking at relevant positions and discussing critical moves, tactical opportunities, and strategic adjustments.
You can go to pawnstopieces.com to learn more about my teaching method.

Details
First Lesson (Online) - 30 mins ($15): I offer a first initial assessment lesson. During the lesson we will discuss your goals, interest in chess and your previous experience (if any). After I have a good understanding of what you are hoping to get out of private lessons, if there is time, we will either review your recent games, play a practice game or go over relevant puzzles. By the end of our first lesson, you'll have a clear understanding of what to expect from private lessons and how we can work together to help you reach your goals.
Online Lessons - 30 mins ($29) or 1 hour ($49): My online private lessons are structured similarly to in-person lessons. We will either play a practice game, do relevant puzzles and/or go over your previous games which will allow me to understand your thought process and provide guided game analysis. I will also sometimes assign homework puzzles so you can continue to study between lessons.
In-person Lessons - 30 mins ($34) or 1 hour ($54): My In-person chess lessons are a great way to get some experience playing over the board. The lessons will be tailored to your individual goals and the areas where your chess can use improvement. We'll often review your past games together. Alternatively we will play a practice game, look at other relevant positions or do puzzles that align with your improvement-areas. I will also sometimes assign homework puzzles so you can continue to study between lessons.
Most in-person lessons take place on Sundays at a location in SE Portland with some exceptions. Reach out to me for details on in-person lessons - (concealed information)
