My Approach to Tutoring:
Techniques and Teaching Methodology:
My approach to tutoring chess is centred around creating a structured yet flexible learning experience tailored to each student’s needs. I believe in building a strong foundation by first ensuring that students understand the basic principles of chess, such as controlling the centre, piece development, and king safety. From there, I progressively introduce more advanced strategies such as opening theory, midgame tactics, and endgame techniques. My lessons are highly interactive, incorporating a mix of game analysis, tactical puzzles, and practice games to reinforce key concepts.
One of my primary teaching techniques is pattern recognition. I help students identify recurring motifs that appear in various positions, which improves their decision-making under pressure. I also focus on analyzing the students' own games, helping them understand where they went right or wrong and what they can improve in future matches.
Typical Lesson Length:
Each session typically lasts 1 hour, which provides enough time for a focused lesson and practical exercises without overwhelming the student. During this time, we’ll cover one or two key topics, solve puzzles, and spend time applying what was learned through games or specific exercises. If needed, I offer follow-up materials for students to practice between lessons.
Qualifications/Experience as a Tutor:
I am a second-year Computer Science student at Trinity College Dublin, with an International FIDE rating of 1432 in both standard and rapid chess. Over the past two years, I’ve been tutoring students in STEM subjects, and I’ve successfully applied these teaching skills to chess, where I guide students through everything from basic strategies to advanced endgames. My experience in competitive chess and tutoring allows me to connect with students of all levels, helping them technically and strategically grow.
Who the Lessons Are For:
My lessons are designed for players of all ages and levels, from complete beginners who are just starting to learn the rules, to intermediate players looking to improve their tactical awareness or prepare for tournaments. Whether you’re a young student interested in learning chess for the first time, or an adult player looking to refine your skills, I provide personalized instruction to help you reach your chess goals.
