About Jess
I earned a B.A. in English from Rutgers University. Shortly after graduating, I began teaching at Audubon High School. While teaching full time, I earned my M.A. from Rutgers as well. Simply put: I love working with words! I minored in Linguistics as an undergraduate and then, for my M.A., I focused on reworking the traditional grading system for students' written work because it's stifling young voices and putting them at a great disadvantage.
Academic writing success starts with rapport. To build that rapport, here's a snapshot from my end: I practice hot yoga, I love all-things nature, I'm interested in sustainability efforts, and baking is a bit of a side-hobby. I've got two beautiful young daughters, a brown chocolate-lab husky mix, and a husband. I'm an English teacher, yogi, research-geek, tree hugger, voracious reader, and a dedicated mama, but above all I am kind. Let's work together!

"Learn the rules like a pro so you can break them like an artist." -Picasso-
I love helping students refine their writing skills! I've worked with all levels from grades 6-12, emphasizing writing in all courses. I meet students wherever they are in their writing journeys; every student has different needs. The most rewarding aspect of teaching is offering individualized writing feedback and watching students learn to love their written voice. Even while teaching public school with 80+ students on my roster, I gave each student's written work undivided attention and individualized feedback.
My main goal is to help students see their written work as a way to insert their voices into an ongoing academic conversation. This method takes the emphasis away from "how can I get an A?" to "How can I be the most effective writer possible? How can I craft my voice ads a writer? How can I learn to enjoy writing?" I can help students build an essay from a blank sheet of paper or start from the top and help them pull apart an already existing piece, word by word, sentence by sentence.
