About Param

Param Khandelwal, from Jaipur, is a dedicated Indian Flute (Bansuri) instructor with 10+ years of training in Hindustani Classical music and 5+ years of teaching experience. He began his musical journey under the guidance of Guru Shri Bharat Bhushan Vaishishtha Ji and is currently continuing his advanced training with Shri Ashwin Srinivasan Ji, focusing on the expressive Khayal Gayaki Ang style on the flute.

Param has completed Sangeet Visharad (5-year Diploma in Hindustani Classical Music – Flute) and is currently pursuing Nipun, an advanced 3-year program in classical music.

As a performer, he has also presented his music at national heritage events in Jaipur, where his playing was appreciated for its depth and expression.

Along with performing, Param teaches students of all age groups and levels, both in India and internationally (UK, USA, France, and more). He has also been associated with Art Gharana, a global art ed-tech platform, for the past two years, guiding international students in Hindustani Classical, Semi-Classical, Ghazals, and Light Bollywood music.

For beginners, the classes start with the basics such as understanding the instrument, correct flute selection, proper holding technique, breathing methods, and producing a clear first sound. Students are guided step-by-step so they can build confidence and develop a strong musical foundation.

The curriculum gradually expands to cover a wide range of music, including:

Indian Classical – Ragas, alap, taans, and improvisation
Semi-Classical – Thumri, dadra, and bhajans
Ghazals & Sufi – Expressive and soulful renditions
Bollywood & Light Music – Popular melodies and film songs

Along with learning compositions, students are trained in essential techniques such as:

Proper flute holding and posture

Blowing and breath-control for a clear, melodious tone

Finger movement exercises for speed and precision

Systematic practice of paltas, alankars, and swaras to build a strong foundation

By the end of the training, students develop both technical skill and musical expression, enabling them to confidently perform across different styles in solo or group settings.

  • 1. Tell us more about your subject. How did you develop an interest in this field?

    I have been practicing the flute for the past 8-9 years and have been focusing on Hindustani classical Gayaki style on the Bansuri for the last 4-5 years under the guidance of my guru, Shri Ashwin Srinivasan ji, a pioneer in this style.The Gayaki Ang (vocal style) on the Bansuri is a highly expressive and intricate approach that aims to replicate the nuances of Hindustani vocal music. It emphasizes fluidity, melodic continuity, and emotive depth, closely mirroring the human voice.
    My journey with the flute began with a straight flute after I saw a musician playing old Bollywood songs, which inspired me to start learning.
  • 2. What or who is the motivation behind you choosing to teach & why?

    I started my flute journey after being inspired by a musician playing old Bollywood songs. Over time, I discovered the depth and beauty of classical music. Teaching allows me to give back, helping others experience the same joy and passion that first drew me to the flute.
  • 3. How does your work help society?

    Music has the power to heal, uplift, and bring inner peace. Through my flute playing, I aim to create a calming and meditative experience for listeners, helping them relieve stress and find solace in the beauty of Hindustani classical music.
    Through teaching, I help students develop discipline, patience, and a deeper understanding of music. Learning the flute not only enhances their musical abilities but also fosters creativity and mindfulness, which are valuable in all aspects of life.
  • 4. If you had to think of a role model for your work, who do you think of & why?

    My role model is my guru, Shri Ashwin Srinivasan ji. His mastery over the Gayaki style and his ability to express intricate vocal nuances on the Bansuri inspire me deeply. His dedication to both performance and teaching motivates me to refine my own playing and pass on this tradition to others.
  • 5. Tell us about your hobbies outside teaching.

    Apart from teaching and playing the flute, i love cooking and eating different cuisines and
    also i love to travel.
  • 6. Do you have an anecdote to tell us about your student or professional life?

    A few years ago, during my early days of learning Hindustani classical music, I was struggling with the concept of Meend (gliding between notes) in a particular phrase. No matter how much I practiced, I couldn't achieve the seamless flow my guru, Shri Ashwin Srinivasan ji, demonstrated so effortlessly.
    One day, during a lesson, my guru simply said, 'Stop thinking about the technique-just sing the phrase in your mind and let your fingers follow.' That moment was a turning point. Instead of mechanically trying to play, I focused on feeling the melody as if I were singing. Suddenly, the Meend became fluid, and the phrase sounded more natural.
    This experience taught me that music is not just about technique but about **internalizing and feeling each note**. Now, whenever I teach or practice, I always remind myself and my students: 'If you can sing it, you can play it.
