About Lawrence
Celtic music surrounded me growing up, mostly through family gatherings where a fingerstyle guitarist always seemed to be quietly playing somewhere nearby. Metalcore entered my life much later, discovered through friends during a loud, chaotic stretch of my teenage years. Balancing something so delicate with something so aggressive taught me real range as a player over time. That same range now shapes how comfortably I move between very different types of students.
Teaching young beginners alongside self-taught adults means constantly recalibrating patience and pacing depending on who's in the room. I never assume prior knowledge with beginners, nor do I dismiss the real progress self-taught players have already made alone. What I find most satisfying is watching a self-taught player finally understand why a technique they'd struggled with suddenly clicks. That realization often changes how they approach practice entirely afterward.
I still play both Celtic and metalcore styles personally, often switching between the two just to stay musically balanced. Staying active this way keeps my teaching genuine and rooted in real, current playing experience. Lessons often shift toward whichever style helps a student build the specific structure they're missing. My hope remains constant, that students leave with real fundamentals intact, not just borrowed enthusiasm.

Self taught players usually arrive with strong instincts but shaky fundamentals, so I start by quietly observing before correcting anything. Celtic fingerstyle patterns are introduced early, their flowing, repetitive nature helping smooth out uneven picking habits gently. Young beginners, meanwhile, start much simpler, learning single note melodies before any fingerstyle complexity enters the picture. Metalcore's tight, palm muted riffing comes later, reserved for students ready to handle speed alongside precision.
As technique develops, I pair Celtic's flowing arpeggios against metalcore's choppier, rhythm driven riffs, highlighting how differently each style demands control. Self taught players often need help unlearning tension built up through years of guesswork, so I focus heavily on relaxed hand position throughout. Young beginners instead build slowly toward simple chord changes, celebrating small consistent wins along the way. I use recorded practice clips across both groups, helping students notice details that live playing often hides.
Real growth happens through honest correction, not constant praise alone, and I'm upfront about that from the start. Fixing small habits early always saves bigger frustration later, especially for self taught players unlearning old patterns. Songs a student genuinely enjoys still guide most practice, keeping sessions engaging rather than purely corrective. My focus throughout stays clear, building real structure without stripping away a student's natural enthusiasm.
