About Josephine

I believe that teaching saxophone is a journey of partnership where the teacher and student work collaboratively to unlock the full potential of the instrument and the musician within. My lessons prioritize a comprehensive technical foundation—breath control, embouchure strength, finger agility, posture, articulation, and tone shaping—since these are critical for expressive and healthy playing. Intonation and dynamics are emphasized early to cultivate sensitivity and musicality. I integrate improvisation into lessons from the beginning, using call-and-response exercises, scale explorations, and guided creativity to encourage personal expression and musical risk-taking. Music theory is taught contextually, making abstract concepts accessible through application in repertoire and improvisation, which helps deepen understanding and fuel creativity. I tailor repertoire to each student’s taste and goals, whether jazz standards, blues, classical pieces, or contemporary music, ensuring lessons remain engaging and motivating. I support students in setting attainable goals and developing consistent practice routines that foster growth and confidence. Technology is an important part of my teaching approach; I use recording apps, metronomes, and play-along tracks to enhance practice and allow students to self-assess. One of the most rewarding moments in my teaching career was seeing a student transform from hesitant beginner to confident performer through persistent work and encouragement. My ultimate aim is to cultivate saxophonists who are technically proficient, creatively expressive, and passionate about their musical journey.

Teaching saxophone is about more than just mastering notes; it’s about cultivating a deep emotional and creative connection to the instrument. My approach blends rigorous technical training with imaginative musical exploration to develop well-rounded saxophonists who are both skilled and expressive.

I begin with core fundamentals—proper breathing, embouchure strength, hand positioning, articulation, and rhythmic precision—to ensure students build healthy, sustainable playing habits. Alongside technique, I integrate improvisation, phrasing, and stylistic studies that span jazz, classical, blues, and pop, tailored to each student’s tastes and goals. I believe music theory and ear training are essential for unlocking musical freedom, so I weave them into lessons using practical, enjoyable exercises that encourage students to internalize scales, intervals, and chord progressions.

Leveraging technology like recording devices, metronomes, and digital backing tracks enriches the learning experience and promotes self-reflection. Performance opportunities are integral, and I support students in preparing for recitals, auditions, and informal gigs, helping them build confidence and stage presence. A memorable teaching moment was guiding a student struggling with improvisation into delivering a compelling solo through targeted practice and encouragement. My goal is to foster not only technical excellence but also the joy and confidence that come from expressing one’s unique musical voice.
