About Rylan

I have more than 10 years of experience in accounting and tax, getting my CPA, with honors, in 2018. My primary focus is in Canadian taxation, specifically corporate tax planning and strategy. I have been tutoring since my second year of university, close to 15 years, focused on accounting, finance, and tax-related courses, but have effectively taught close to any course required for university and CPA. Outside of these, I have taught at the university level for several years and have marked the CFE. This gives me a very different insight from other tutors, as I understand specifically what universities and CPA are looking for.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is to first understand how you learn, whether it be through practice problems, cases, drills, etc. to a structured lecture format. We would also look to determine what you are most worried about in the course, including exam taking strategies. Afterwards, we tailor our lesson plans to what works best for you.

A typical lesson plan would be preparing and reviewing materials ahead of our session and incorporating my notes to ensure that our focus is on how you learn best. We would focus on the areas of challenge primarily, with a focus on tools that help you overcome them.

Additionally, we will focus on the soft skills required to be successful in your course. Most courses involve a homework and exam component, with the exam component being the most stressful. We would discuss exam taking tips and strategies and focus on building the three tenants of excelling in exams: technical skills, confidence, and application.

With over 10 years of experience as a private tutor, I have found the most success in understanding each student's learning style and focusing material towards what works best for them. My students have regularly achieved success in their courses through the approach of tailored lessons and consistent practice and incorporation of exam taking methods that I provide.

I would encourage anyone looking to earn a degree in accounting and those looking to pursue their CPA to reach out to me. I have worked with countless students to achieve their goals and become a CPA and can't wait to work with more.
