About Madeleine

I am a private tutor with over 5 years of tutoring experience offering guidance across English language and literature. I studied English up to Advanced Higher (A2) level in school, before taking my literature skills to my undergraduate degree, where I specialised in Japanese literature.

I have previously taught AQA, OCR, Edexcel and Cambridge International English syllabi across GCSE and A Level. Specific texts which I have taught include 1984, Animal Farm, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, An Inspector Calls, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, Dracula and The Bloody Chamber. I am also familiar, however, with most of the texts common to the various exam boards.

I also offer help for students at KS1 and KS2 level. I've much experience helping kids with literacy and numeracy, and my enthusiastic personality is often a good much for younger kids as well as teenagers. The 11+ exam in particular is something which I am familiar with and happy to teach.

Finally, I offer assistance in proofreading for essays and dissertations. Having written many essays (including a 10,000 words dissertation) during my undergraduate degree at Cambridge, this is work that I am skilled at and actively enjoy. I've proofread dissertations and pieces of written work on a casual and professional basis before, and I would be happy to receive any enquiry in this area.

About the lesson

I tailor each session to the individual needs of my student, and will make an effort to gauge a student's particular areas in need of improvement. I enjoy a hands-on approach - meaning that I think the best way to learn is to try things out on top of discussing them.

In our lessons we will attempt written answers to exam style questions; work on the structure and form of our responses; and discuss together the key details, themes, images and writing techniques of any given text or passage. I always aim to create a friendly and supportive environment for my students when doing so - I understand that English can be a challenging subject for many students and I want tutees to feel that they are free to try out new ideas without judgment.
