About Sophie

As I was born and raised in Luxembourg, an incredibly multilingual environment where we begin learning foreign languages at a very young age, I am fluent in Luxembourgish, German, French and English, and have an intermediate Spanish level.
I first came to the UK in 2016, to complete a BA in English Literature and Spanish at the University of Exeter, followed by an MPhil degree in Comparative Literature at the University of Cambridge. After the completion of my MPhil, I became a translation trainee for the European Commission, spending six months in their English translation unit, where I primarily translated texts from German and French into English. I also worked as a substitute teacher at an international school, and as a private tutor for the last two years, primarily teaching English as a foreign language but also English literature.
In September of this year, I returned to England to start a PhD in Comparative Literature at University College London.

About the lesson

I have worked as a private tutor for two years, and I also have some experience teaching larger groups (mainly as a summer school teacher where I would run revision sessions to help students practise the material of the previous year.) As a private tutor, I primarily taught English as a foreign language, to secondary school students of varying ages from 13 to 18. I also have experience teaching English literature, German, and French. I believe that my own experience of learning a multitude of languages, Germanic as well as Romance languages, gives me a distinct advantage as a tutor. I understand the importance of practising a new foreign language in a variety of engaging ways to make sure a student's confidence in their abilities increases alongside their knowledge of this language.
