About Nicky

Hello! My name is Nicky and I have a wealth of professional experience in teaching English. I love teaching English to people from all around the world. I am a Qualified Teacher of English as a Foreign Language with a Bachelors (Honours) degree from Reading University in the UK, and a Masters’ degree from Cornell University in the USA. This means I am aware of the differences between British and American English. I speak some French, German, Kiswahili, Chichewa, Italian, and Spanish. As a student of languages, I understand the challenges of learning English and so I am very patient. My varied English teaching experience includes teaching English to refugees and migrants in the UK; teaching in a business school; teaching international civil engineers; one-to-one conversational English; and teaching ESL to international high school students aged 11-18 who needed to acquire GCSE English language, and culture. I have taught ESL to primary school children in reading, and assisted primary school girls and boys with special educational needs who struggle in school. I have a big heart for all children and young adults who work harder to achieve and I enjoy teaching neurodivergent individuals of all ages and abilities. I have various interests that may resonate with yours: I have worked in the medical sector, in farming and community development, with wildlife, the environment, and research. I have had gender awareness training, training in human rights-based approaches, and I have supported the development of foundational literacy for teacher educators in Teacher Training Institutions in Malawi.

About the lesson

I am a qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher. I am strong in grammar, excellent in conversational English, and I love to explain British culture! I have a standard British English accent. I will design your lessons for you, at your level and in your areas of interest. The lessons will reflect your needs, for example for use in your profession, with colleagues and customers at work, for shopping and visiting places, or to make your spoken English clearer. I work with all ages, with beginners, intermediate and advanced students of English including professionals who need to attain business and academic English. I can teach (and play with) younger children and teenagers and aim to make the learning journey fun and engaging at every level. Whatever you want to learn, we will agree the targets and I will help you tick off your requirements so the progress is clear. I provide lots of constructive and positive feedback so that you, and your children build on strengths. As I tailor the lessons to your preferred learning style, you will enjoy for example: role playing; games; using online tools; practice interviews; practice presentations; answering the telephone. We will use diverse materials from the UK and around the world. My focus is on you, helping you succeed, and building your confidence. A typical lesson is 45-50 minutes.

Details

I charge extra for transport to your house/public space +£7 (up to 10 km distant). We can discuss parking arrangements. I have daytime flexibility at present. Evenings are also possible.
