About Tekin

About Me I am a filmmaker and director with a passion for bold, character-driven storytelling that resonates across cultures. My journey in film began with short films that earned festival recognition, including Your Place or Mime (Best Director & Best Screenplay, Santa Barbara Film Festival) and continued with international distribution of Here’s Johnny and The Incision. In 2016, I directed my first feature, Troy: The Odyssey, produced by The Asylum Studios and released worldwide on Netflix. Since then, I’ve developed television projects, including a sitcom pilot for Netflix, and continued writing and directing original feature screenplays. My work blends cinematic craft with a deep focus on human connection, emotion, and story. I was selected for the Directors Guild of America’s prestigious Episodic Directors Training Program, and I am a member of the Writers Guild of America. My experience spans narrative films, commercials, music videos, and television, giving me a wide-ranging perspective on both independent and studio productions. As a director, I believe in collaboration, preparation, and vision. Every project is an opportunity to explore truth through performance, image, and rhythm — to create stories that stay with audiences long after the credits roll.

About the lesson

Teaching Philosophy in Directing

As a director and storyteller with over a decade of experience in film and television, I believe teaching directing is about more than guiding students through technical craft — it is about unlocking their creative voices and empowering them to lead with clarity, empathy, and vision.

In my own career, I’ve directed award-winning short films, a feature film distributed globally on Netflix, and developed original television projects for major platforms. These experiences taught me that directing is both an art and a discipline: a balance of storytelling, collaboration, and problem-solving.

In the classroom, I focus on three core areas:

1. Storytelling as Foundation – helping students break down scripts, understand character, and shape compelling narratives.

2. Visual Communication – teaching cinematic language, blocking, shot composition, and working with cinematographers to serve the story.

3. Leadership on Set – preparing students to inspire confidence in cast and crew, make decisive choices under pressure, and cultivate a collaborative creative environment.

My approach combines hands-on directing exercises, scene work with actors, and critical analysis of films. I emphasize professional practices students will encounter in the industry, from pitching and pre-production to working with producers and managing post-production.

Above all, I want students to leave my class with the confidence to direct not only a project, but also themselves as artists — to trust their instincts, communicate their vision, and bring original stories to life.
