I personalize my classes for each student as I strongly believe no two students are the same. In our first class, we will make a plan to achieve your specific Brazilian Portuguese goals together.

I am best with students from a beginner to an intermediate level. I also love teaching students who are preparing for GCSE or A-Level Portuguese exams.

Additionally, I will identify and work to improve your common problems in Portuguese.

Brazilian culture is exotic, exciting, and diverse. Let me be your guide to the wonders of Brazil.

When taking classes with me I will give you access to my large library of materials for class material, self-study, and homework.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I started my journey into second language learning in 2016. A Brazilian girl I was dating at the time had a serious accident and ended up in a coma, she has since recovered. To pass the time in the hospital I decided to start learning Portuguese. I quickly found I had a passion for it, and later moved to Brazil to fully immerse myself in the language. While there, I started to teach English as a second language while studying Portuguese. My experience both as a teacher and student of second languages helps me to see the process from both sides. Since then, I have also started to learn Spanish and Russian and my goal is to speak 5 languages fluently within the next 10 years.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For English, I would have to choose Atticus Finch from my favorite book, to kill a mockingbird. He represents all that is good with people and he has an excellent command of the language. With Portuguese, I would choose Bia Ferreira, a musician whose lyrics cover a wide range of topics and who shone a light on many social issues within Brazil for me.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

My favorite thing about English people and culture is tea! I love the fact that this drink brings people together and offers everyone the chance to do something small for someone else. In the UK, it is considered rude if you make a cup for yourself and don't offer one to someone else.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

English is my native tongue, it is the language in which I think and dream. It also is a language that connects people from all over the world and that can open so many doors for people. Portuguese to me is beautiful and learning has changed the way I see myself and the world.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty people face in a language is knowing how to progress and structure their learning. This is different at different stages of the process. For beginners, it is better to focus on high-frequency verbs and topics of personal interest and daily life rather than for example airport vocabulary which is not an everyday situation. Intermediate to advanced students need then to dramatically increase their exposure to the language. Most of what we experience we forget (just try to remember what you had for dinner last Tuesday) so it is essential that our interactions are meaningful in order for us to remember them. At this stage, learning vocabulary also gets harder as the words we want to learn are not so common. It is essential then to recycle the vocabulary with creative writing tasks so that we can increase the frequency with which we see them.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I recently completed my teaching Portuguese for foreigners qualification. In my next class, my Portuguese teacher told me she had told all her friends and family about it because she was so proud that I had passed. I felt so happy with myself and it is amazing to reflect on the fact that although my journey with languages began only in 2016, I am now a confident speaker of the language.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My first experience in Brazil was in 2016. It was the Olympic year and I went to watch the Paralympics. It was an incredible time to be in Rio and experience such a vibrant culture.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am a Superprof because I really care about my students and their progress. This is not just a job to me, it is my life's passion. I am constantly learning about languages and how to better learn them. My goal is to pass on this passion to my students and the world because I believe that communication is the key to peace, happiness, and prosperity.
