About Stephen

I am an experienced meditator with thousands of hours of personal meditation practice and extensive training in traditional and contemporary meditation methods. I am also a cognitive psychologist and neuroscientist, specialising in the effects of meditation and mindfulness on wellbeing and brain health.

I teach compassionate mindfulness face to face across Kent and to online students from all over the world. Over the last ten years I have shared modern and traditional meditation practices with hundreds of students.

Compassionate mindfulness is based on the Buddhist Lojong system of mind training long associated with improved wellbeing. The latest evidence from cognitive psychology and neuroimaging endorses this method and provided the basis for its use by modern secular students. As well as all the traditional health benefits associated with meditation and mindfulness this approach is designed to boost brain health, limiting the effects of cognitive decline.

My work has included a number of scientific studies investigating the relationship between different forms of meditation and their effect on wellbeing and cognitive performance.

In addition to teaching I am currently researching the Scientific History of Mindfulness as a PhD project. I write, blog and podcast on meditation related issues and undertake meditation and mindfulness research.

Improved Health and Happiness - The two goals of meditation and mindfulness

A desire to increase levels of wellbeing and good health are the most common reason that people give for starting to meditate. In general terms regular meditators report high levels of happiness and low rates of certain health problems, particularly those linked to stress and anxiety. In a recent neuroscience study, meditators were found to have brains seven years 'younger' than non meditators. Two of the tools we can use to improve our own health and wellbeing are compassion and mindfulness.

So what happens in the class?

Whether I teach you individually, in a group, through the internet or face to face, the lesson structure will be the same. The method is suitable for almost everyone, many of my students are complete beginners, they range in age from 22 to 75 and come from all walks of life. The practice is simple and intuitive and most people become confident with it very quickly.

We sit comfortably with a straight back, we regulate our breathing, become calm and bring our thoughts under control. It's all very informal and relaxed, most people really enjoy the experience and feel some benefit even after the first lesson.

The method is based on the Tibetan Lojong system, elements of which can be found in most modern meditation practices. We mindfully generate compassion for self and other within a structured framework. There are seven themes that we train in, a different aspect each week. Each theme is slightly different, likely to bring positive changes to different neural networks, or different parts of the same network. Each lesson is a standalone experience, you don't need to complete seven sessions to get some benefit (but it will help).
