About Lowen

I’ve spent 5 rewarding years teaching chess to a wide range of learners, from absolute novices to young tournament hopefuls. My own chess journey began competitively, playing in local clubs and studying modern and classic grandmaster games. While I respect the complexity of high-level chess, my true passion lies in making it accessible and exciting to others—especially those discovering it for the first time. I bring a blend of logical structure and fun creativity to every lesson. I teach with both digital boards and physical sets, depending on your preference, and use a lot of visual tools to simplify complex tactics. My sessions are interactive—you’re not just listening, you’re thinking, speaking, calculating, and most importantly, playing. I value creating a relaxed environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process. Chess is more than a board game—it’s a workout for your brain, a school for decision-making, and a path to greater concentration. I’ve seen it help kids build patience, adults reduce stress, and learners of all ages find joy in problem-solving. My goal is to help you develop not only as a player, but as a thinker. About the lesson

My chess lessons in Glasgow are crafted to meet the needs of players who want both fun and structure in their learning. For beginners, we cover the full rules of chess, piece movement, and basic tactics like forks, pins, and skewers. Early lessons introduce game openings such as the Italian Game or Queen’s Gambit, explained in simple, memorable terms. Games and exercises are analysed on-screen, helping students see both correct patterns and common mistakes. Intermediate students focus on developing strategic depth. We analyse positions for control of centre, long-term piece activity, pawn structures, and king safety. I teach visualisation and calculation methods to evaluate moves ahead, promoting independent thinking. Chess notation is introduced for game recording and review. Students get puzzles every week that target specific skills—often based on positions from actual tournaments or famous games. This builds both memory and instinct. Endgame understanding is built gradually, showing how to convert small advantages into wins and how to defend difficult positions. We practice practical endings—rook vs. pawn, king opposition, triangulation—and use examples from classical games. Alongside technical skills, I teach how to manage time, deal with nerves, and remain focused throughout long matches. Each student receives a personalised development plan, with game reviews and performance tracking across time.
