About Lucy
Teaching saxophone is a journey that combines discipline, technical mastery, and artistic expression. My teaching philosophy focuses on helping students build a solid foundation by developing breath control, embouchure strength, posture, finger dexterity, and rhythmic accuracy. These basics are essential for healthy playing and long-term progress. I emphasize tone development, encouraging students to explore dynamics, phrasing, articulation, and vibrato to create a unique and expressive sound. Music theory and ear training are integrated naturally through repertoire and improvisation exercises, making the learning process meaningful and connected. Improvisation is central to my approach; I introduce it early with simple motifs and scale patterns, gradually encouraging students to develop their voice and musical confidence. Each lesson is customized to the student's interests and goals, whether focusing on jazz standards, blues, pop, or classical music. I also utilize technology such as recording apps, loopers, and play-along tracks to support practice and creativity. One memorable experience was helping a student overcome their fear of soloing by breaking down improvisation into manageable steps, which led to confident and joyful performances. My goal is to create a supportive and inspiring environment where students feel free to explore and express themselves through the saxophone.

My teaching philosophy centers around the belief that saxophone learning is a dynamic, evolving conversation between technique, theory, and personal expression. I prioritize establishing a solid technical foundation that includes breath control, embouchure development, finger dexterity, articulation, and tone production.
These technical elements provide the necessary tools for students to express themselves fully and healthily. However, I emphasize that mastery of the saxophone extends beyond mechanics; it requires cultivating a deep musical understanding and a sensitive ear.
Therefore, I integrate active listening and ear training into every lesson, helping students identify pitch relationships, harmonic progressions, and rhythmic subtleties. Improvisation plays a vital role in my teaching, as it encourages creativity and confidence.
I guide students through improvisational frameworks such as scales, modes, and chord tones while encouraging them to develop their own voice through experimentation and analysis of iconic saxophonists’ solos. I use a variety of resources, including backing tracks, recording tools, and slow-down software, to support practice and self-assessment. I strive to foster a safe, supportive space where students can take risks without fear of judgment, promoting both musical and personal growth. Witnessing a student evolve from tentative attempts to confident, inspired improvisation is one of the most fulfilling aspects of teaching.
