About Thomas

I’m a professional 3D Generalist with over five years of industry experience, currently creating animation and 3D content for rides and attractions. My background began in photography and visual storytelling before I earned a BA in Visual Communications and transitioned into 3D.

This combination of artistic foundation and technical expertise shapes how I teach—focusing not just on how to use Blender, but how to create work that looks professional and tells a story.

I started as a self-taught artist, so I understand the challenges beginners face and how to overcome them efficiently. I’m a patient, supportive tutor who adapts to your pace and goals. Whether you're opening Blender for the first time or refining advanced workflows, I’ll help you progress with clarity and confidence.

My lessons are pretty relaxed and built around what you want to learn. Whether you're just opening Blender for the first time or trying to level up your skills, I’ll guide you through things step by step in a way that makes sense.

We can cover things like modelling, materials, lighting, rendering, animation—or even work through or review a full project together if that’s your goal.

A typical session (around 1 hour) might include:

Live demos where I show you how things work
You trying it yourself with guidance
Tips and shortcuts I use in real projects
Help with anything you're stuck on

I try to keep things practical and easy to follow—no overwhelming jargon, just clear explanations and hands-on learning.

  • 1) What first sparked your interest in 3D and digital creation?

I started in photography and visual communications, but I noticed that almost every project I created had some kind of animated element sneaking in. Once I pulled on that thread, everything clicked. I began challenging myself to make small 3D projects in just a few days, discovering gaps in my knowledge and filling them as I went. That curiosity snowballed into what is now my full‑time career as a 3D Generalist.
  • 2) How has Blender and the 3D industry evolved since you began?

Blender has gone from “underdog” to a genuine industry powerhouse. The pace of innovation is incredible — real‑time tools, procedural workflows, and a massive open‑source community have completely reshaped how artists work. It’s an exciting time to be in 3D, despite what AI headlines might have you believe. I started back in the 2.7 days, and watching Blender hit milestone after milestone has been an amazing journey.
  • 3) What areas of 3D do you specialise in, and how does your background influence your work?

I work across the full pipeline: modelling, animation, lighting, shading, rendering, and workflow development. My photography background gives me a strong eye for composition and lighting, which influences everything I create. I’m proudly a jack of all trades — and that’s exactly how I’ve chosen to position myself in this industry.
  • 4) Who inspires your approach to 3D?

I’m inspired by the artists, developers, and open‑source creators who push Blender forward. Their generosity, innovation, and willingness to share knowledge have shaped my career more than I can put into words.
  • 5) A memorable moment from your self‑taught journey?

One moment I’ll never forget is hitting “Render” for the first time and just… waiting. My computer was far from top‑tier, so leaving something to render overnight for a single frame felt like a huge commitment. When it finally appeared — and actually looked the way I hoped — it was pure magic.
  • 6) What would you say to someone overwhelmed by Blender?

Everyone feels that way at first. Blender looks complex because it is powerful, but you don’t need to learn everything at once. One clear concept at a time builds confidence surprisingly fast. I don’t know everything about Blender either — and the deeper you go, the more you realise how endless it is. Find comfort in knowing you can’t escape the rabbit hole… so you may as well enjoy the ride.
  • 7) What passions influence your work and teaching style?

Photography still shapes how I see light, colour, and storytelling. I also love problem‑solving and learning new tools — anything that blends creativity with technical thinking gets a big thumbs‑up from me.
  • 8) What makes you a strong tutor for Blender and 3D?

I combine real production experience with a patient, supportive teaching style. Being self‑taught means I understand the hurdles beginners face, and I know how to guide people through them. My goal is simple: help students gain the knowledge and confidence to lead their own creative journeys.
