About Aliya

With all my students, I make it very clear the first time they meet me and every time after: I AM HERE FOR YOU! I am here to hear both your right and wrong notes. I am here to answer any questions and concerns you may have. I am here for your growth as an individual. I want all my students to remember they are on their own musical path and that all scales, exercises, and music exploration homework I assign is not for just any trumpet player, but for you based on your desired music path, skill level, and personality. Yes, personality matters! I want you to feel comfortably challenged and feel inspired every time you touch your instrument because you are growing every time you play.

About the lesson

After playing for over a decade, the most notable lesson that has stuck with me is that every musician learns differently. I choose to approach each musician as such: an individual that needs their own criteria so that they can feel 'comfortably challenged'. I start with asking what kind of horn player the student would like to become (classical, jazz, soul, salsa). Once the student establishes their "horn identity" I start to assign fundamentals that are both used universally amongst trumpeters and fundamentals that pertain to their desired music path. I want the student to not only learn fundamentals, but to appreciate how they work in the grand scheme of their playing style, their desired genre, and amongst other instrumentalist. Therefore, every lesson ends with homework that consists of: new scales to practice, an artist/sub-genre to explore, and an ever-growing record of their progress (that stems from their first practice). I do urge that students start with an hour lesson for their first lesson in order to have a proper introduction that would include: who they are, who I am, exploration of their skill levels, establishment of proper playing fundamentals, and what to expect for the next lesson. I primarily teach students that are either entry level or intermediate level.
