About Rachel
Tutor Profile & Teaching Approach – Rachel Tillotson As a Senior Lecturer and award-winning screenwriter, I’ve spent years helping writers at all levels find their voice and shape their stories with clarity, originality, and emotional depth. I specialise in High-End TV (HETV), short films, and feature screenwriting, having taught across universities, industry labs, and independent courses. My lessons are designed for adults, beginners, and experienced writers who want to dig deeper into their talent and refine their craft.

Teaching Methodology My approach is built on the belief that knowing your opinion is the key to knowing your voice — and that voice is the heart of any great script. In my sessions, I guide you to explore your own perspective and how it might fuel the stories you tell. I create a safe and encouraging space for discussion, experimentation, and play, where you're just as likely to laugh as you are to be challenged. I’ll use a blend of: Guided discussions Practical exercises Writing samples Script analysis And I’ll often share my own writing and experience to spark ideas or illustrate technique. I value dialogue over instruction, and I encourage debate, curiosity, and openness. Whether in a one-to-one mentoring session or a small group class, you’ll be expected to engage, ask questions, and begin to shape your own creative instincts. Lesson Structure A typical lesson lasts 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the group size and goals. Sessions are usually held in the evening, with flexible scheduling to suit busy lives. Whether we’re breaking story, analysing character arcs, or workshopping a scene, each class is focused, practical, and deeply rooted in story. Experience & Background: I bring to my teaching over 20 years of industry experience as a writer, lecturer, and mentor. My work has won numerous awards, been selected for prestigious talent labs including the Torino Film Lab, Stow Story Lab and Berlinale Talents, and optioned by production companies in the UK As a mentor, I’ve helped countless writers move from idea to script, from uncertainty to confidence. My students have gone on to win commissions, secure agents, and, perhaps most importantly, fall back in love with writing.
