About Carl
Teaching piano has been my main work for 10 years. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, and I spent my student years accompanying singers and playing in small ensembles. That background taught me how to listen, and listening sits at the heart of my lessons.
Many of my students prepare for graded exams, and most pass with merit or distinction. One boy who failed his first exam with another teacher passed with merit after a year with me. His mother cried at the results, and so did he.
I teach children from age six and adults who are starting again after decades away from the keys. Every student gets a clear weekly plan and honest feedback. We work hard, but we laugh a lot too.

Students learn fastest when their fingers feel relaxed, so technique comes first in my piano lessons. We work on a curved hand shape and even finger strength through short daily exercises. These take five minutes at home and make a real difference within a month.
Sight reading is built into every lesson from the very beginning. I use simple new pieces each week so students learn to read instead of memorise. A student of mine recently sight read her exam piece on the first try, which surprised even her.
For students working toward graded exams, I plan backwards from the exam date. We cover scales, pieces and aural tests in steady stages so nothing is left to the final month. Mock exams in my studio help students get used to the pressure.
I also make room for music the student picks themselves. When a teenager brought in a film theme he loved, we used it to work on chord voicing. Lessons stay serious in purpose but friendly in mood.
