About Marie-Therese
Marie-Therese Gummer is an award-winning pianist, pedagogue, and co-author of the Pianokids series. She holds a Master of Music in Piano Performance with a focus on Piano Pedagogy from The Hartt School, University of Hartford, where she also taught in the undergraduate and community divisions.
She earned her Bachelor of Music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Graduate Diploma in Baroque Studies (harpsichord) from the University of Toronto. At 14, she received her ARCT in Piano Performance from the Royal Conservatory of Music, studying as a scholarship student in the Young Artist Performance Academy. Her formative training also includes summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School, Indiana University, and studies in Europe.
Ms. Gummer is an active leader in music education, serving on the Executive Council of the Whitby Branch, Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association. She adjudicates across Ontario, is a teacher trainer and workshop clinician, and is recognized for her expertise in early childhood music education, piano pedagogy, and performance practice.
Beyond her professional commitments, she volunteers as an Adoption Screener with Team Cat Rescue, participates in her local church, and enjoys gardening, baking, and time with her husband and two young daughters.

Marie-Therese has over 30 years of experience teaching piano to students aged 4–99, fostering a positive, friendly, and encouraging learning environment. She integrates music theory, ear training, and sight reading with practical piano performance, following the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) program, and has extensive experience preparing students for exams and university music programs.
Her teaching focuses on technique, musical expression, and overall musicianship. Lessons include warm-ups, review of repertoire, new pieces, and activities in theory, ear training, and sight reading. Students leave each lesson with clear goals and engaging, structured homework.
What sets Marie-Therese apart is her ability to adapt lessons to each student’s learning style while maintaining high standards, helping students achieve success in exams, competitions, and higher education.
Her lessons are ideal for beginners through advanced students, children to adults, and anyone preparing for RCM exams or university programs.

Please Note: Rate is higher for in-person at my studio. $35.00 per half hour or $70.00 per hour.
Free Lesson: 15m meet and greet. We discuss goals, instrument recommendation, required books with a brief introductory lesson.
Beginners - RCM Level 3, lessons are 30m in length.
RCM Level 3 - 5: 45m in length
RCM Level 5 - ARCT/University: 1 hour
