About Simon

I am an Australian producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and mix engineer based in London. I’ve been recording, mixing and producing music for 23 years and I have obtained a Certificate 4 in Audio Engineering and a Certificate 4 in Music Business Management at JMC Academy in Sydney. I've been teaching music production for 10 years, as well as guitar and songwriting. I am a music nut - I love most genres but a few faves are 90’s Hip Hop, Punk and Post-Punk especially, New Wave, 80’s pop, Synthpop, Funk, Garage Rock, Art Rock, Krautrock. Soul. I love it all! The only genres I’m not too keen on are jazz and death metal. I have produced (or co-produced), wrote and mixed multiple albums with my Australian band The Cops, all of which debuted in the Australian Independent Music charts in the top 5. In 2006, the single “Call me Anytime” came in at number 33 on Triple J’s Hottest 100. During my time with the band, I managed to work with some of Australia’s premier producers including Paul McKercher (The Vines), Magoo (Midnight Oil), Casey Rice (Tortoise) and Kim Moyes (The Presets, Kirin J Callinan/DMA’s). I have also engineered and produced numerous projects for Australian artists past and present including Dan Black, The Diamond Quills, Yvonne Moxham, Street Kid Vandal to name a few.

About the lesson

I’m Simon and I’m offering beginner to intermediate music production lessons that are relaxed and easy to understand. My focus is: 1. To help you learn and refine all of the basic recording and mixing fundamentals so you’ll no longer feel overwhelmed. 2. To help you apply those fundamentals in different situations so you can navigate different genres and project requirements. 3. To have fun and actually enjoy the process! 4. To ALWAYS be available whenever you need to ask a question. I’m currently doing online lessons only until the UK opens up fully again. I’m available for international online lessons in English provided the time differences can be worked out! I focus mainly on Logic Pro, but can branch out to other DAWs if needed. Here are some examples of concepts you’ll learn: RECORDING FUNDAMENTALS: How to record your instruments properly and at the correct volume. PROJECT MANAGEMENT: How to keep your project in a state of organisation to maximise your output. MIXING FUNDAMENTALS: So much to mention here, but a few concepts are: Volume. Panning. Frequencies. Imaging. Dynamics. Effects. Gain staging. Phase. Mix buss processing. Vocal mixing techniques. Bass mixing techniques. How to buss properly. Guitar mixing techniques. Drum mixing techniques. Using samples. And many more. Everything is laid out in a clear concise manner so that you understand these concepts and can apply them to your mix. I include mixing notes for free so you can always have little cheat sheets on hand. I am also happy to provide samples that you can use for your development. Your first lesson is free and will be a bit of a cursory chat about where you are at, where you want to be and anything else you want to ask about before you decide if you want to keep progressing with lessons. I also offer guitar and songwriting lessons.
