About Li
Educator and artist committed to making Chinese calligraphy accessible to all, and helping students foster a regular practice.
Deep competence in Chinese culture through academic, personal history. Has taught at university level for 10+ years (PhD UC Berkeley). Training as a historian informs teaching approach.
Has taught Chinese calligraphy in public workshops (Berkeley Art Museum, UC Berkeley, commercial venues), ongoing classes (art studio), and more informal community settings (Teance, tea house). Also published “Speak, Ink” on calligraphy and materiality, or loss and struggles w modernity (design journal, ARCADE).

Learn basics about brush strokes, character composition combined with introduction to history, poetry, philosophy and aesthetics.
Lessons can be given in Mandarin Chinese (higher rate).

The free first lesson with Li allows you to get to know the tutor and discuss your needs and expectations.

Details
$250/hour for lessons given in Mandarin Chinese. Can translate into English.
$125 per student available for small group classes (2-3 students max).
Extra $10 per student, per in person class session if instructor supplies materials. Students can purchase materials from instructor, online, and/or at brick & mortar store.
Instructor does not have a car. Transportation fee covers time + transit fees from Berkeley (near campus).
Instructor can also teach at cafe, library, or any quiet(ish) public space with a large enough table.
