About Alex

I received my academic research training while completing my BA in History at the University of Houston with a focus on U.S. Southern Studies; I minored in Cultural Anthropology. My academic work has been published in the annual volume of the Journal of the American Revolution, (JAR,) Houston History Magazine and is also published at researchgate(dot)net and academia(dot)edu. In addition to my academic work, I am also a volunteer transcriptionist for The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and The Library of Congress. I am also a retired investigative reporter. My genealogical work has been published since 1997 on my website, "The Colvin Study," and another project, "Narratives in Black and White" showcases reconstructed narratives of mixed-race couples from the U.S. antebellum period. I look forward to helping you.

I received my academic research training at the University of Houston. I've been published in academic journals, and I consult regularly with clients. I also publish essays online and in academic blogs, and am ready to help you take your research to the next level. I use the Historical Method as my analytical approach, use Chicago citation standards, and have a working familiarity with a wide variety of archives, repositories, and record types. I'm also a citizen transcriptionist with the Library of Congress and the National Archives. I'm available to help the beginner start his family history quest from a solid foundation or help the more experienced researcher resolve difficult genealogy evidentiary conflicts. Help is one phone call or email away. I can work one-on-one or in small groups of five in seminar style. Caveat: I do not teach genealogy website navigation or family history book publishing. But I can teach you how to make sure your data is rock solid and publication-worthy.
