About Katherine
Outside of architecture and teaching, I’m a pretty creative and curious person. I love sketching, exploring new ideas, and making cute little 3D fidget toys or random objects when I’m bored. I enjoy both digital and hands-on creative work, which is a big reason why I was drawn to architecture in the first place.
I also love solo traveling, trying new food (I LOVE FOOD), and exploring different cities, cultures, and architecture around the world. Traveling has really shaped the way I see design and creativity. In my free time, I also enjoy swimming, visiting museums and cafés, and finding inspiration in everyday spaces and experiences.
I’m bilingual in English and Mandarin, and I enjoy connecting with people from different backgrounds. Overall, I’d say I’m someone who’s creative, open-minded, and always looking for new experiences and ideas to learn from.

As a tutor, I focus on creating a supportive, personalized, and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable exploring ideas, asking questions, and building confidence in their creative abilities. My teaching approach combines technical guidance with conceptual thinking, helping students strengthen both their design skills and their ability to communicate ideas visually and verbally.
I tailor every lesson to each student’s goals, experience level, and interests. Depending on what a student wants to improve, lessons may include portfolio development, architectural drawing, conceptual design, creative problem-solving, visual storytelling, presentation techniques, design critiques, software guidance, or architecture school preparation. I emphasize the design process just as much as the final outcome because I believe strong thinking and clear communication are essential in architecture.
A typical lesson usually begins with reviewing current work, discussing goals, and identifying areas for improvement. From there, we may work through sketching exercises, precedent studies, design feedback, conceptual development, or presentation strategies together in a collaborative and interactive way.
What sets me apart is my interdisciplinary and international perspective in design. I recently graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a degree in architecture and will be continuing my studies as a Master of Architecture student at the University of Pennsylvania. Through professional internships, competitions, and portfolio development experiences, I have gained insight into both the creative and strategic aspects of architecture education. I am also bilingual, speaking both English and Mandarin, which enables me to connect with and support students from diverse backgrounds.
My lessons are ideal for high school students interested in architecture, students preparing portfolios or applications for architecture school, or anyone looking to strengthen their creative thinking and visual communication skills.
