About John
As much as I love teaching, I love learning everything from A to Z. And to help each student achieve their goals. Whether I am talking to an accountant in Finland or Russia about excise taxes or a brain surgeon in Brazil about brain surgery, I love it. And we learn together. Not just in reading, listening, learning vocabulary, pronunciation, and building confidence. But also about the world, our place in it, and how we can make it better.
For example, when I work with a gerontologist to research Alzheimer's, MCI, and dementia in journals like JAMA or The Lancet, it's exciting to discover new treatments and therapies together. Especially when we use a published paper written by that student. This often happened in classes with an epidemiologist I teach who trains future physicians. So whether it's a class with a lecturer of international bankers from Hong Kong talking about NFTs or cryptocurrencies, or a European filmmaker talking about working with Hollywood actors like Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, or a Brazilian film director talking about translating his latest horror movie script into English, it's always educational and entertaining at the same time. And because I strive to find the latest information in their career, they often discover useful and new information they can use in their field. Recently, a physician shared new data that we learned about in the field of cardiology with a group of cardiologists he knows. Psychologists discover new ways to help their patients when they read about improved treatments and they are improving their English faster because they are immersed in a stimulating learning environment that they find exciting.
When my students achieve their goals, I am happy that I was able to help them. One student wanted to move up from working on an oil rig near Japan, and he realized that the key would be learning English. With hard work and dedication, he achieved his goal and was even transferred to the company's headquarters in Moscow. Another student barely knew five words of English when we started, and he wanted to get his Ph.D. in English while studying in France. And not only did he succeed he thanked me in his thesis and then went on to MIT.

What percentage of communication is nonverbal?
There have been a number of studies on the complex topic of nonverbal communication with varying results. However, most experts agree that 70 to 93 percent of all communication is nonverbal. -lifesize.com
Having online classes using audio-only makes it more difficult for the student at the start, but in a real face-to-face situation, their ability to communicate will be greatly enhanced.
Pick Your Brain
Ask a lot of questions to keep the student engaged, attentive, and continually improving.
Amped Up
Start with a subject that is important to the student. In doing so the student will stay engaged and excited during the learning process.
Carpe Diem
Tell the student that we learn by doing. Even if you only have a very basic understanding of a second language you need to use it as much as possible.
Do-Over
Students need to see a new word 30 times before they remember it. If they are having trouble with specific word(s) find articles that use that word(s) a lot and use them in your lessons.
Rhymes
If a student has trouble pronouncing a particular sound use tongue twisters to help them overcome this difficulty.
Example: th
The thirty-three thieves thought that they thrilled the throne throughout Thursday.
Rewording
If a student has trouble pronouncing a particular word use rhyming words to help them overcome this challenge.
Example:
Future = Say few. Say church. Say few church. Say few chur. Say future (few-chur).
Iron = Say I. Say Earn. Say I earn money. Say iron (I earn).
When you smile your student will hear it in your voice. Make them feel relaxed to improve learnin
