About Vasiliki
As an adolescent, I have worked for the Times, for prestigious law firms such as Norton Rose Fulbright, for grass-root NGOs for parliamentary monitoring. I have organised a TEDx event on my own. I have participated in the International Philosophy Olympiad and have been awarded by the Greek president.
Yet, my favourite place is a library, a silent sanctuary, with muted noise and minimal distractions, where the page-turning sound enables me to indulge into mesmerising readings. From them, I seek no answers, but I desire to ruminate on questions, often taken for granted. This profound will to infuse my every activity with meaning has been the product of my 12-year experience as a pianist. Arcs of intricate notes are merely printed lines, until the musician coaxes them to life. Similarly, an idea needs to be interspersed with human interpretation to become incarnated. I am ready to infuse my lessons with this personal meaning. This is because of two reasons, which I think would also characterise me as a tutor.
Firstly, I am a firm believer of the power of ideas. The pen is mightier than the sword and I aim to instil this mentality to my students, rendering their understanding and their consequent excellence a personal mission, if it is to live in a society, where education is valued and respected.
Secondly, I appreciate knowledge for its intrinsic, per se value - maybe blame reading of the Meno problem for this. Of course, though, I am not myopic and I do understand that questions like “And why should I learn x?” or “What’s the importance of y’s piece of information?” might come up. Personally, I am ready to learn without any particular answer to the above questions, but I am fully aware of the fact that students might not be ready to process this. Hence, I will be there to support them and to give them opportunities to apply both the knowledge and the transferable skills cultivated within the framework of our lessons, while I am trying to present knowledge as something that has itself value in being acquired.
