About Emma

My greatest passion in life is learning, and I believe that teaching is part of that process. Every time I see someone learn something, especially when I am helping them, I too am learning about the world. My maths-teacher mother instilled and nourished this passion in me from a young age, and is the reason I have chosen to follow in her footsteps (not with maths, though, sorry mum!)

Studying an ancient language can be one of the most exciting ways to broadening one's horizons, as it provides the tools to explore the ancient world and its people. However, it can also be very challenging, both getting used to the process of learning a dead language, as well as facing the difficulties that systemic lack of accessibility can present. This recognising and overcoming of difficulties is a central part of my teaching ethos. I will strive to teach each student in a way that matches how THEIR brain works, as everyone comes to these languages with their own unique thought processes and learning types. (And, as someone whose first Greek teacher was not understanding of different ways of learning, I would hate to follow in his footsteps and leave students behind.)

Learning Ancient Greek, like any language, demands some hard work, but it can still be fun, exciting, and incredibly rewarding, and my hopes are that my students will come away from our lessons feeling the same way.

About the lesson

I've had practice as both a tutor and teacher, so I am very flexible as to how our lessons can go! I'd be happy to teach in a more structured style, whether from beginner with a textbook of your choice or continuing your studies and boosting you to the next skill level. On the other hand, if you are already in a class and just need some extra help or tutoring, I'd also be happy to have a more open-ended lesson, where you bring me your questions and topics you're struggling with, and I can supply extra support and targeted exercises.

I am happy to schedule my lessons in 30-minute and 1-hour slots. I would recommend a longer session length (1-hour) if our lessons are teaching-based as opposed to tutoring, but I am happy to have students of either format for either length of time!

I'd be happy to take on students from any age group and skill level, from school-aged to undergraduates, as well as adult beginners!

My experience in teaching and tutoring includes being the head tutor of the music department in my undergraduate studies (I was a double major in Ancient cultures and music), where I matched tutors to students, as well as tutored my own students every semester. I ran one-hour tutoring lessons, and normally had about five students in any given semester. Additionally, my Classics tutoring experience began with being the peer tutor in my Ancient Greek classes during my undergraduate studies, meaning I planned review sessions and taught course materials to my peers who had been absent from class or were struggling with the material.

My teaching experience includes working as a theatre instructor, teaching acting skills to children aged 6-13.
