About Leighanne
I am very confident about my approach to working with young people and I am prepared to give it my all to ensure that they have a positive support network. I believe that it is essential to building positive relationships with families in order to ensure that I can facilitate to meet their needs and encourage them in the right direction.
Throughout my teaching experience I have had the opportunity to develop different methods and techniques of teaching students with SEND and SEMH; as well as understanding how to effectively manage behaviour.
What draws me most to tutoring is the opportunity to develop some expertise and new techniques which will enhance my teaching experience. Having had the experience in working with children and families; I can say that I wholeheartedly put in my all to create a positive outcome for the students and families.

Throughout my teaching experience I have identified that the best way to learn is by reflecting on past experiences, observations and feedback from mentors, tutors and peers. Reflective thinking is essential to both students and teachers learning. (Rogers, 2002)
According to Dewey (1933) we do not learn from experience, we learn from reflecting on experience. He also states that an experience results in an interaction between the world and oneself, therefore resulting in a change in environment as well as the individual. Learning is a holistic process of adapting into the world rather than just a result of cognition. (Kolb, A & Kolb, D, 2005)
Being able to reflect on my experience not only teaches me to evaluate and challenge my own beliefs, values and practice; but it teaches me to be more enthusiastic and motivate my learners as I am constantly reflecting on what works best for me, as well as my learners based on their individual needs. As my students change, I change, each class provides me with new challenges and opportunities to develop my teaching and my understanding.
As an advocate for active learning I aim to empower my students to articulate ideas and apply abstract theories.
