About Noah

I learned the language in an academic setting where Hebrew was taught to every student, but very few gained proficiency - much less fluency - without a native speaker as a parent. Other students typically achieved greater proficiency in other languages - like Spanish - despite receiving fewer years of instruction. This was due, in my opinion, to a well-meaning but flawed institutional approach.

Hebrew is a difficult language to adopt if not spoken in the home, and even those raised outside of Israel in fluent homes may grapple with writing, reading and grammar. The characters are unique. The language is read from right to left.
ESL students often report learning English from American/British movies, music and TV. While Israel certainly has its own media, it is usually not popular or largely available to those abroad - and Hebrew is certainly not prominent globally.

This is all to say that learning Hebrew requires a genuine desire to progress and improve, as well as a patient yet persistent mindset. If a student has these qualities, they will meet their goals of taking in the language and making it their own.
If you take classes with me, I will go through a bit more about my learning progression, what activities and strategies proved helpful or wasteful, and devote my attention to the areas YOU want to focus on. I can help you with learning Hebrew for biblical study or preparation for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah service (note: cannot help with chanting). Or, if you just want to come in and get help with whatever you're currently learning, that's great too. I am passionate, patient and eager to help.

About the lesson

I am capable of adapting the lessons to the learner, if given some context on current level and course of study. Can work based on a requested area of emphasis, an established curriculum a student may be tasked with, or any perceived areas in need of improvement.

I am new to formally tutoring Hebrew, but have previously tutored middle school students in Spanish and helped students of many levels with Hebrew informally.

After over 15 years of academic instruction, I am also aware of some flaws in typical Hebrew curricula (ex: lesser emphasis on speaking, with prioritization of grammar perfection, writing, etc.) and have plans to help students overcome them.
