About Lisa
In my studio, teaching the flute is a harmonious blend of precision, artistry, and student-driven inspiration. I establish a foundation of thoughtful technique by guiding students through posture alignment, effective breath support, and controlled embouchure exercises with ear-training feedback. Scales, tone studies, and articulation routines are introduced progressively—always with the focus on musical intent rather than rote repetition. As we layer on expressive elements—dynamics, phrases, tone color shifts, vibrato—I engage each student in active listening and interpretive discussion to nurture their artistic voice. Music theory appears in context—whether we analyze a melodic motif, examine scale relationships, or deconstruct orchestral excerpts. Improvisation is also central: each student creates small melodic ideas or rhythmic variations within familiar material, reinforcing musical intuition and improvisational confidence. Lessons are carefully curated to suit individual interests—audition pieces, jazz standards, film music, or classical concertos—while maintaining a balanced progression of technique and musicianship. Home practice becomes a collaborative process with tailored daily goals, demo recordings, and virtual check-ins to ensure consistent progress. One of my proudest successes involved an adult beginner who aspired to play at an open-mic night; through consistent foundational work and expressive coaching, he performed a heartfelt rendition of a jazz-pop tune at his first showcase. My guiding mission is to cultivate flutists who play with technical clarity, musical sensitivity, and creative courage, equipped to connect emotionally with every audience they meet.

Each student is unique, and my flute teaching philosophy reflects a dedication to growth—technical, artistic, and personal. I center my lessons around foundational technique—balanced posture, breath control, embouchure clarity, resonance development, agile fingering, articulate rhythm, and tone flexibility—while nurturing individual musical voice. For beginners, I begin with approachable exercises and melodies that ensure early success. As students advance, I guide them through increasing levels of complexity—etudes, scale systems, and full compositions that deepen interpretive insight and fine‑tune control. I present a wide stylistic palette—Baroque, romantic, folk, jazz, and contemporary works—plus student favorites, to engage their passions.
Complementing performance focus, I integrate sight‑reading, aural skills, and phrasing analysis for a holistic musical foundation. Creativity is woven in: I lead improvisation exercises, basic songwriting prompts, and occasional ensembles to cultivate confidence and artistic play. One memorable highlight was supporting a teen student as they composed an improvisational solo inspired by ocean waves, which significantly elevated their emotional connection and practice enthusiasm.
Technological tools—metronome apps with subdivision, recording software for lesson review, interactive digital scores, and reference recordings—enhance technical accuracy and self‑directed reflection. My mission is to empower each student not only to play the flute accurately, but to express themselves boldly—instilling a lifelong appreciation for music, a sense of agency, and a resilient mindset that extends far beyond the instrument.
