About Tim

I currently teach academic writing and study skills at a Russell Group university. My teaching philosophy revolves around helping you to build skills that will not only help with your current work, but also carry over into future assignments and the world beyond university. Whilst it may sound a bit odd, my end-goal is to help you reach a point where you no longer need my help! By talking over your ideas and the principles of good, critical, academic writing I will help you to take your thinking further, build arguments and analysis, and produce writing which clearly demonstrates the true potential of your skills.

I took up teaching academic writing and study skills whilst I was studying for my PhD. I truly enjoyed helping students to achieve their best, and I love the conversations we have about their subjects and ideas. I very often encounter students who know their subjects well, but have difficulty expressing their ideas properly in academic essays and assignments. For me, there is something immensely satisfying in helping somebody to take an idea, develop it, polish it, and express it in writing.

I have a strong academic background in the arts, humanities and social sciences. I have a PhD in history, and I've published papers in teaching and pedagogy based on my academic practice. Whilst I primarily work with students in the arts, humanities and social sciences I can also potentially provide support with academic writing and study skills to students from STEM-based subjects as well.

About the lesson

I provide one-to-one support with academic writing and critical thinking skills for undergraduate and postgraduate students. As a tutor my focus is on helping you to build long-lasting skills you can carry with you into future assignments and beyond. I will help you to understand your assignments, identify what your lecturers are looking for, and explore possibilities in order to truly think critically about your subject. You can expect me to ask you lots of questions to get you thinking!

Alongside developing these ideas I'll also help you to express them elegantly and fluently in an academic style. We'll explore different techniques used in academic writing, and discuss how to apply them to your work in order to help you become a skilled academic writer.

I've taught academic writing and study skills at Russell Group universities for almost ten years. My tutoring is based on pedagogical theory (I hold a PhD and am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy), but also on my extensive experience of supporting students with their work on a daily basis - it's quite literally what I do!

I emailed him my final essay and we discussed how I could use critical thinking to improve my thesis statement by using the ideas that were already there and then linking the main idea in the thesis statement to the rest of the essay. His questions really encouraged me to think about the concepts I was arguing about in a more analytical and critical way, moving away from the more descriptive way I've been writing my essays. Brilliant tutor, I highly recommend. I've got our next session booked!
