About Maria
Are you always full of ideas, but struggle to communicate them effectively in written assignments? Or perhaps you’re unsure why your recent grades weren’t quite what you had expected?
As a writing coach, I am skilled at helping my students to understand the appropriate academic format through which they can confidently and effectively express their ideas, enabling them to achieve their goals. Writing for academic purposes, whether in school, college, or university, can sometimes seem like a daunting and frustrating task. However, with a solid foundation of skills relating to research, analysis, and essay structure, we can find ways to apply the same frameworks to all of our work, making it a little bit more effortless every time we write!
I am an experienced coach who has been delivering 1-1 and group writing classes for the last 3 years. Prior to that, I also worked as a freelance writing specialist, offering constructive feedback on essays, dissertations, and theses for university-level students in a huge range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. I have an undergraduate degree in languages (First Class Honours) from the University of Bristol, as well as a postgraduate social sciences degree (1.3: “Very Good”) from the Humboldt University in Berlin. For my final dissertation, I wrote 60 pages exploring the idea of languages in conflict in India, for which I undertook extensive qualitative research.
I also have a CELTA qualification in teaching English to speakers of other languages, and worked as a freelance English teacher for several years. With this, I have taught a huge range of students and specialisations, from General English, to English for legal purposes, business English, and UK ESOL exams. I’m therefore highly experienced in planning and delivering tailored classes, teaching language use and grammar, and anticipating the difficulties that non-native English speakers have when it comes to writing.

As a writing coach, I can provide one-to-one sessions to support you with all areas of English writing. I help a wide range of students, from those in their first years of high school all the way to postgraduate studies, to understand and apply the main features of academic writing, putting them in a better position to get the grades they're looking for.
With 1-1 support, there's no such thing as a typical class - I believe in tailoring each lesson to the needs and goals of every student I work with. However, here is a list of things we might cover, depending on your level and requirements:
General academic writing:
- Brainstorming, initial research, and planning for essays
- Literature reviews & analysis
- Citing sources & building them into your argument effectively
- Paragraph structure (both for essays and exam responses)
- Proofreading and structural/language feedback for in-progress drafts (essays, dissertations, coursework, etc)
- Help with citations and referencing styles, from formatting a bibliography to avoiding plagiarism
For English language learners, this might also include:
- Advanced grammar support
- Specialised, subject-specific vocabulary practice
- Extra focus on word choice, academic register, and sentence fluency
- Reading assignments & discussions to build familiarity with English academic texts
For younger learners:
- Exploring & practising different forms of academic writing required in schools (e.g. persuasive, narrative, expository, descriptive, or creative)
- Guidance on referencing & avoiding plagiarism
- Developing a stronger academic voice
- Literary analysis
- Responses to literature (poems/novels/plays)

Perfect! My tutor is really easy to talk to and makes me feel comfortable in class. I enjoy our conversations, and at the same time she helps me notice my mistakes in a nice way. I also like that she sends class notes, which makes it easier for me to review later.
- Thank you, Saud! I'm impressed by your comprehension skills, and by your commitment to learning English! Keep up the hard work!Maria's response :
Perfect! Great class, exactly what I needed! I reached out to Maria for some really last minute help with an essay, and she was able to fit me into her schedule really quickly. She gave me some great tips for how to structure it better, making it really simple to see where my arguments weren't so strong. She also helped with quite a few problems I had with word choice and grammar, so I'm feeling a lot more confident about submitting now! Would definitely recommend a class with this teacher for anyone looking to improve their assignments or writing skills in general
