About Abby
I always knew that I wanted to teach in some capacity, but it wasn’t until senior year where I decided I wanted to become a music teacher. Because of this, I started taking private lessons in Bay City and eventually went on to attend Western Michigan University, where I completed five years of music courses and completed my student teaching at Bangor Public Schools. After graduating, I went on to pursue a Master’s Degree in Clarinet Performance at Oakland University and began teaching private lessons at Red Piano Music Studio, where I teach wind instruments and piano to students of all ages.
My philosophy of teaching is very clear: all students, no matter their background, deserve to be in a music classroom where they feel welcomed and included. This is why I want to craft lessons based around each of my students’ individual needs.
I had the privilege of studying clarinet with Dr. Ellen Glick at Western Michigan University. At Oakland, I studied under Dr. Erin Dowler, the professor of clarinet and a clarinetist of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra, and Ralph Skiano, principal clarinetist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. I look forward to expressing everything that I’ve learned throughout college to you!

I am the type of teacher who uses the scaffolding method in my lessons. I typically start my lessons by getting to know the students to see where they are playing-wise. If any troubles come up, I like to address them by breaking them down into steps to help remedy the struggle. For upper-level students, sometimes I like to keep the lesson fun and engaging by playing some duets at the end of the lesson!
I work to make sure that each student is comfortable with their playing abilities, so my goal in this position is to craft lessons based around your needs.
Some of the components of good clarinet playing I like to cover are proper air support, good articulation, sound production, and reed maintenance.
