  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak English fluently because of my commitment to becoming the best GMAT tutor. My journey into mastering English has always been inspired by remarkable figures. For instance, the character Colonel Hans Landa from "Inglourious Basterds" illustrates the power of language and communication. His ability to manipulate conversations and convey complex ideas is a reminder of how essential language can be in influencing outcomes.

On the other hand, listening to Charles Bibilos, known as GMAT Ninja, profoundly shaped my approach to teaching. I admired how he could simplify intricate GMAT concepts into relatable ideas, making the language of the exam accessible to all students. His influence motivated me to not only improve my own English but also to help my students overcome their fears of the GMAT by breaking down the barriers of language and comprehension.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One historical figure I deeply admire is John Maynard Keynes. His profound contributions to economics not only reshaped financial policies but also illustrated the importance of effective communication in conveying complex ideas to the public. Keynes was able to articulate his thoughts in a way that made them accessible and relevant, which is a skill I strive to emulate in my teaching.

Additionally, I hold great respect for Noam Chomsky, whose insights into linguistics and social critique have influenced not only language theory but also the broader understanding of communication. Chomsky's ability to dissect language and its implications resonates with my approach to teaching the GMAT. I aim to instill in my students the same critical thinking skills that both Keynes and Chomsky exemplify, encouraging them to analyze information thoughtfully and express their ideas clearly.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

A phrase I particularly appreciate is "the devil is in the details." This expression resonates deeply with my approach to GMAT preparation, where attention to detail can make all the difference in achieving a high score. In the context of the GMAT, understanding the nuances of each question and the strategies behind them is crucial.

Moreover, I admire the tradition of mentorship that exists within academic circles. Just as in my own journey where I have learned from figures like Charles Bibilos and Noam Chomsky, I believe in the power of guiding others through the complexities of language and logic. This culture of collaboration and sharing knowledge is what inspires me to provide my students with the tools they need to excel.

Ultimately, phrases like "the devil is in the details" serve as a reminder that mastery comes from thorough understanding and diligent practice-principles that I emphasize in my tutoring sessions.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking English is essential for me because it opens doors to countless opportunities, especially in academia and professional growth. As a GMAT tutor, being fluent in English allows me to connect with students from various backgrounds and guide them through the complexities of the exam, which is predominantly in English.

The beauty of language is that it enables me to teach a Korean student in the morning, followed by a German in the afternoon, then a Peruvian, and finally an Italian: all in the same day! This diversity enriches my experience and highlights the global nature of education today. Language serves as a bridge to understanding diverse cultures and perspectives, and being fluent in English enhances my ability to engage with these unique viewpoints.

Ultimately, mastering English is about more than just language proficiency; it's about equipping myself and my students with the means to navigate the world confidently. This aligns perfectly with my goal of helping them achieve their dreams through effective GMAT preparation.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

One of the main challenges in learning English lies in mastering its subtleties, such as idiomatic expressions and cultural references. As Wittgenstein famously said, "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world." This highlights the idea that language is not just a tool for communication; it is also a reflection of culture and a way of thinking. To truly understand English, one must embrace the culture and mindset of its speakers.

To help overcome these challenges, I recommend immersive practices, such as engaging with native speakers, consuming media in English, and exploring cultural contexts. By doing so, students not only improve their language skills but also gain insights into the cultural nuances that shape communication. This approach fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of the language, making the learning process both enjoyable and effective.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I vividly remember my mother's relentless efforts to provide me with opportunities for language learning, especially in a country like Peru, where mastering a language can be a pathway to social mobility. Despite the financial constraints our family faced, she was determined to enroll me in language academies for English, French, and German.

One particular summer, she managed to save enough to send me to an intensive English course. I still recall the first day vividly. Walking into the classroom, I was filled with a mix of excitement and anxiety. The instructor was a native speaker, and we were encouraged to communicate entirely in English. Initially, I struggled to keep up, but my desire to honor my mother's sacrifices pushed me to persevere.

As the weeks went by, I gradually gained confidence and began to engage more actively in discussions. By the end of the course, not only had my language skills improved, but I also formed lasting friendships with classmates from diverse backgrounds. This experience solidified my belief that learning a language is not just about mastering vocabulary and grammar; it's about embracing new cultures and perspectives. My mother's dedication to my education continues to inspire me as I strive to offer my students the same opportunities for growth and success.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

One of the most impactful trips I took was to London to visit my best friend, Juan Manuel. He is a fellow Peruvian and undoubtedly one of the most intelligent people I know. His achievements in the field of econometrics are truly remarkable, and witnessing his excellence inspired me profoundly.

During my stay, we engaged in deep discussions about economics, language, and culture. Juan Manuel's ability to articulate complex ideas in English was both impressive and motivating. I remember one evening, sitting in a café in Soho, as he explained advanced econometric models, effortlessly weaving in English idioms and phrases. It struck me how language mastery allows one to convey intricate thoughts clearly and persuasively.

This experience not only improved my conversational English but also fueled my passion for teaching. I realized that to inspire others, I needed to deepen my own understanding of the language and its nuances. Juan Manuel's success served as a reminder that with dedication and the right mindset, we can all achieve greatness, and it solidified my commitment to helping my students navigate their own paths to success.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What distinguishes me as a Superprof is my unwavering commitment to empowering my students through a holistic approach to GMAT preparation. My background as a Peruvian who has navigated the complexities of language learning gives me a unique perspective on the challenges students face. I understand that mastering English is not just about vocabulary and grammar; it's about cultivating confidence and critical thinking skills that are essential for success in the GMAT and beyond.

I believe in fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves and making mistakes. I take the time to tailor my lessons to each student's individual needs, drawing from a wealth of resources and strategies that have proven effective. My passion for teaching is fueled by the joy I see in my students as they progress and achieve their goals.

Furthermore, my diverse experiences, from studying in language academies to collaborating with brilliant minds like Juan Manuel, have enriched my understanding of both the language and its cultural context. This allows me to teach not only the material but also to instill a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the broader implications of language mastery. I strive to be more than just a tutor; I aim to be a mentor who inspires my students to embrace their potential and navigate their paths with confidence.

Ultimately, my dedication to their success, combined with my own journey as a language learner, positions me as a Superprof who genuinely cares about my students and is committed to their growth.
