About Niall

I am a 22-year-old recent graduate of the University of Oxford, where I studied German and Philosophy. I have been playing chess since the age of 7, and chess has been a major part of my life, both competitively and socially. During university, I was Secretary of my university chess club for two years and an active member of the wider chess community.

I am soon to begin a Languages PGCE at UCL, with the aim of pursuing a career in teaching. I have also previously tutored German and volunteered with several youth groups, giving me experience working with young people in different settings.

I am particularly interested in helping others develop both their understanding and enjoyment of chess. I would describe my teaching style as relaxed, fun and creative, while also focused and supportive. I enjoy getting to know each student and adapting to their individual needs, and I find it particularly rewarding to see students improve, develop their confidence and enjoy the game more as they progress — whatever their starting level.

About the lesson

My approach to chess tutoring is tailored to each student, adapting the lessons to the student's age, playing level, individual goals and personality. I

I typically use a combination of playing games, solving puzzles, learning opening theory, endgames and positional concepts, and post-game analysis. I encourage communication from the student, particularly in explaining their thought-processes, as I feel this best helps them understand the game and improve, as well as making the lessons as interactive, engaging and enjoyable as possible.

Lessons are typically one hour long, although I am happy to adapt the length depending on the student's age and requirements.

I am a University of Oxford graduate with a 2:1, with a 1950 FIDE rating and an online rating of around 2400. I have previously tutored chess students of a wide range of abilities and ages, from 7 to 75, both online and in person. I have also run group chess training sessions at university, giving me experience teaching both individuals and groups.

My lessons are suitable for beginners through to intermediate and stronger club players, and I am happy to work with both children and adults. Whether the aim is simply to learn and enjoy chess, improve a rating, prepare for tournaments, or develop a deeper understanding of the game, I tailor lessons around the individual student's needs and goals.
