About Nicholas

A lifelong passion for chess has granted me with a wealth of insight into the game which I tremendously enjoy sharing with each of my students.

Competitively active since grade six, I draw upon a long history with the game and I can understand the different perspectives of younger and older players alike from casual, to club and competitive tournament players.

Around 2020, I materialized my aspiration to become a full-time chess coach and have maintained a consistently strong base of students ever since. Over the course of the last six years, I have mastered the ability to tailor a unique approach for each student to substantially increase their skill.

My own achievements include a Class-A 1900 FIDE blitz rating and 2147 ECF rapid rating and I currently maintain a level of 2150 on chess.com across all time controls. I have also published two courses on opening theory for Chessable and continue work on requested future installments. I rank my greatest impact in chess, however, as helping hundreds of students to discover and be amazed by their own hidden abilities.

I look forward to meeting students of any age interested in improving their analytical thinking with the ultimate strategy game!

About the lesson

My lessons typically last for an hour and include a study portion as well as a live games component. In the first few sessions, I will initially customize a specific repertoire that suits the student's style using Chessable, an enormous online chess library that emphasizes moving pieces. Having this personalized library inspires students and gives them a clear sense of progression, while the hands on emphasis of this platform really engages their brain on more levels than the text would alone.

The second half of the lesson always includes some actual gameplay on Lichess, where I continue to give game commentary and insight to the student. We will also explore features unique to Lichess like certain chess variants and how to save games in a study. I will often encourage students to play outside of the lesson using daily challenges from myself and other students as well as weekly online tournaments. Extensive game analysis and review will also be provided for any students participating in tournaments.

I hold a valid WWCC Victoria.
