If you are one of those South Africans who sees the value in becoming multilingual, then you will find that opportunities abound. Whatever your background, with a whopping 11 official languages on offer, the more languages you can add to your CV, the better.
Interestingly, even though English is the most widely spoken language around the globe, in South Africa it is only the home language in one of 10 households. By contrast, Zulu, which is spoken by 25% of the population is the dominant language, followed by Xhosa which is spoken by 16% of the locals.
Amazingly, because Xhosa and Zulu are so similar, even mutually understandable, it is quite common for students to weigh up the benefits of taking either Xhosa or Zulu lessons. While Xhosa is widely spoken in Port Elizabeth, you may have various reasons for wanting to take Zulu language lessons.
If you do, one of the first things you will notice is that there are many language similarities and even identical words that mean completely different things. Be on the lookout for these potentially confusing words:
Perhaps you’re already an isiZulu student and really need extra academic support from a private tutor?
If you’re taking Zulu as a Grade 12 subject, then it is highly likely that you’ll be looking for extra help somewhere along the way. Regardless of whether you are taking Zulu as a first or third language, it can be a complex undertaking that often requires extra tuition
Is your setwork Impi Yabomdabu Isethunjini?
If you’re in Matric, you are probably reading Impi Yabomdabu Isethunjini which is one of the CAPS approved Zulu literature pieces that often requires the help of a private Zulu teacher.
The book is a story about the divided Ngubane family. Mbhabhadisi is the oldest son who has a good life in Umlazi. By contrast, his sister Linono marries into a family that won’t accept her fatherless children. Initially, the children are looked after by their uncle Ndosi, but after pressure from the community, he decides to send them to the city. At this point, Mbhabhadisi, refuses to take any responsibility for the children resulting in him and his wife becoming the villains on whom the story centres around.
Grade 12 setwork is always a challenge, especially when it comes to in-depth character portrayals. Fortunately, private Zulu lessons are an excellent way to ensure that you get the support you need to achieve the highest marks possible.
When your home language is not a Nguni derivative, learning isiZulu can seem completely foreign and even overwhelming. Private Zulu lessons can certainly help to bridge that gap.
So what can you expect from your Zulu teacher?
In a nutshell, besides those fantastic-sounding clicks and poetic metaphors, there’s the complicated grammatical structure of Zulu to master. As you advance in Zulu, you can count on learning how to deconstruct prefix and root word combinations.
Depending on your budget, ability and reasons for wanting to take Zulu language lessons, there are an array of tutors available, if you know how to begin your search.
You can use the location finder on Superprof to find a Zulu teacher near you, and in Port Elizabeth, there are at least 19 to choose from. Besides that, you can be sure that tutor credentials are pre-verified for your peace of mind. Not only that, but you could benefit from a first free lesson which will help you to ascertain whether or not they are a good personality fit for you, or not.
Fees generally depend on the background and qualification of your tutor. For example, some tutors have formal education experience while others are A-students who are capable of giving conversational Zulu language lessons. Either way, it’s a platform that offers versatility and flexibility and your lessons in Port Elizabeth need not cost more than about R152 per hour for private Zulu lessons.
Good luck on your journey to speaking one of South Africa’s most powerful languages.
