¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? I have been speaking Spanish for seven years and studied it as a minor in my Bachelor's degree. I have lived and volunteered in Spain and travel there regularly, as well as read, speak and write in Spanish daily. Not only do I have a strong understanding of Spanish grammar and vocabulary and a deep love of the language but I also understand how to learn it, as it is my second of five languages. As I have done when teaching Spanish in the past, I'm able to understand the conceptual gaps and differences between the student's first language (particularly if it's Latin or Asian) and work with the student to jump over those hurdles towards greater comprehension. I use a communicative approach which focuses on building the student's fluency and confidence. Finally, I have a strong understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture and history, and so am able to use interesting and contextually relevant materials to keep lessons engaging and lively. I see the most substantial and sustained improvement when I work with students for 1-3 hours a week, for a minimum of 2-3 months. With 2-3 months, I generally start to see my students improve. With 6 months it seems this improvement becomes more substantial and long-lasting. I always prioritize the safety and mental well-being of the student.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

No, I didn’t- I learnt it at the University of Sydney during my undergrad in International and Global Studies, particularly during my six-month exchange to Madrid where all my classes were in Spanish. I was inspired to learn Spanish initially simply because speaking a second language always seemed close to magic to me, and Spanish seemed to be a feasible and useful way to achieve this goal. As a Latin-based language with the same alphabet, it seemed possible to me and I knew it was the third most spoken language in the world, second in terms of geographical reach. Over time though, the amount I have gained and learnt through Spanish has made me very grateful for my decision.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One historical figure I’m particularly familiar with is Frederico Garcia Lorca, a Spanish poet and playwright who wrote in the first half of the 20th century. Not only did he live and participate in a pivotal moment in Spanish history, but his writing, particularly his use of structure, character and breadth of vocabulary have increased my understanding of nuance in Spanish.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

In English when something sad or painful happens to someone, or we want to apologise, we say ‘sorry’ regardless of personal blame in the situation. As a result, there are times when you will say ‘I’m sorry to someone and they will say "why? It isn’t your fault". In Spanish, the equivalent phrase ‘lo siento’ means ‘I feel it’, and doesn’t imply the same sense of blame. There are many situations, particularly when trying to express care or feeling for a person or situation, where the Spanish phrase feels is closer to meaning.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking Spanish has become an invaluable part of my life. Not only can I feel how it has widened my mind, but it has and continues to give me access to information and perspectives which otherwise would be difficult for me to see. In my case, Madrid, and the friendships I have been so lucky to make there, are another home to me
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

For me at first, the conceptual jumps between English and Spanish felt huge and often impossible- initially, I really struggled with differences such as that between ‘ser’ and ‘estar’ and different types of verbs, such as reflexive and perfect tense. With time, as I began to compute and accept these differences, I continued to find speed difficult- when people spoke quickly to me the words blurred, and I struggled to separate them. I remember these difficulties when I teach my own students, and try to explain to them where conceptual differences are hard, and why. Language is meant to be used, so I try to get students speaking as soon as possible. I also try to gradually increase the amount I speak in Spanish in the classes as the student becomes more confident, as well as expose them to a wide variety of exercises and content.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Many words in Spanish I connect to the specific moment I learnt them, and or needed to use them in day-to day life. For example, once I was cold and was trying to explain to a friend I wanted a blanket, but I didn’t know that word for blanket. I told them I want something big and warm and square and laughed. They laughed too and said ‘manta’ (blanket). This memory still comes back to me whenever I think of blankets or am shivering from cold.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

The semester-long exchange trip I did in the final year of my Bachelor's degree to Madrid, was probably the time when I started to solidify my Spanish and start to feel comfortable functioning in the language. For the first few months, I went to bed exhausted each day, after having navigated my classes, conversations with friends, public transport etc. However, after a few months, life started to feel lighter and more effortless and my independence and confidence grew. It was wonderful.
